172 driveshaft replacement - cost?

  tiTTy & SV650
Am I right in thinking the 172 CV joints can't be replaced without replacing the whole driveshaft?

Anyone got a rough idea of cost to supply and fit a new driveshaft.

Mk2 ph2 172.

Cheers

I believe it's a shaft you'll need to buy and last time I looked Renault were doing them for £100 each on exchange basis.

rory182 - that aint to bad for a shaft actually. i know of many more cars where there more expensive just in the aftermarket - but that £100 is from Renault.

think i checked this a few months ago and was told that they were no longer doing the exchange shafts - they're now about £200 outright from Renault (?)

only going by what i've read from here, but there doesn't seem to be a widely regarded source for pattern shafts - all seems a bit hit and miss. they're all different between the models as well apparently

^that's unhappy reading! what a PITA Renault are with some of these bits

rory, i think the CVs knock off the end of the shafts, but it's getting hold of another that's the problem

Fun and games eh so many variations, makes sense with the different track of the different models.

I'll see what the feedback is tomorrow, might be something else but I think it's a CV. There's a specialist in Glasgow somewhere that rebuilds them I'm sure but I need the car for Thursday for a road trip

recon places can normally turn around a shaft in a day so if you can get it off and into them tomorrow you should be ok.

Its not convenient sadly, too busy at work and can't be arsed juggling vehicles (I'm kind of spoilt for choice!) opposite ends of town etc.

Cheers for the advice folks

Verdict: offside outer cv boot had split and thus it's run dry and is goosed. Offside front shock goosed, nearside rear shock goosed (shocks I knew about and am hunting for Konis ideally!) and front discs are near goosed too lol - I don't brake heavily but will do this as a matter of course.

£105-£130 for the driveshaft + 1 hours labour - cash, no VAT - simples!

can't really complain at that price for the shaft.

M

mini-valver

OS is so easy to change, doesnt even drop box oil. Takes about 20 mins on a jack with 2 sockets, lol.

well thats an hours labour then which is what they quoted, I dont have time and can't be arsed either. Happy to pay an hours labour and if they get the wrong shaft then it aint my problem.

My dad said that it looked too difficult to do when he was under the car fitting a new wish bone the other day.

Does the anti roll bar, ball joint or wishbone need to be taken off to do it?

These are all such a pain in the ass to do =/

You only really need to take the hub nut off, jack the car up, take the wheel off, undo the two suspension strut bolts and then pull the whole hub to the left and you can pull/wiggle the driveshaft out from the hub.
You can take the hub off to see what your doing a bit clearer but you dont really need to.

PITFA! Parts supplier supplied a valver drive shaft FFS, then said oh we can't get one for that car, we can send it away for 4-5 days for a refurb if you like.

So....took the car back, and called a transmission specialist near my flat and the cars going in tomorrow for a refurbished driveshaft to be fitted @ £95

How can you tell if it has gone?Mine has just started to make a knocking noise like a loose wheel sound whilst braking or steering.

Get it on the ramp and look at it, my outer boot had split there was grease in the area from it and it's obviously run dry and worn. A knock on lock and at low speed maneouvring, also feel it through the wheel if you're observant.

I just got a transmissions specialist to do it, £95 fitted inc vat, the noise has gone. I'd recommend a specialist transmission place or a Renault sport supplier in order to get the correct part.
