172 Electric window fault

  Mazda 2, MX5 Mk2.5 Sport
My drivers side window has started playing up, closing itself when open and the relay clicking like mad when te window is closed. It also refuses to close at all sometimes.

Anyone else had a similar problem?

TBH I've got an idea its the wiring in the door. It started to happen occasionally after renault had the door panel off to sort out a clicking noise when the window was closed after being fully open. Hasn't done it for months until now and seems to start/stop happening if I go round a bend quickly or hit a bump in the road.

Mine did a similar thing. Renault replaced the ECU (just still under warranty thankfully). Hasn't dont it since - <touch wood>

Just been out in the car and when I pulled up on the drive the relay clicked a few times with the ignition off and the key out!?

Now the drivers side window switch doesn't work without the ignition on so that rules out the switch and probably the wiring in the door.

The other day the window wouldn't close at all so I checked a couple of fuses. When I reseated some of the fuses the window went back up so I made sure all of the fuses were seated properly thinking that was the problem but it's still happening.

The only thing I can think to check now is that the relay is seated properly and not loose, I think the banging you get from the passenger side when you lose traction may have shaken it a bit loose as when I'm driving on smooth roads the relay stops clicking.

Are the relays behind the fuse box? if so how do I get to them (too lazy and not really had time to have a look yet)

  Mazda 2, MX5 Mk2.5 Sport
Right! I've just got home and the window won't go up at all. I've drove round the most uneven roads round by me and still it didn't go back up. I've swopped the relays around and no difference. Checked fuse again still nowt.

I'm now thinking it must be the door switch or the wiring inside the door as thats the only thing renault have touched on the car (Does anyone else think they create more faults on Renault Sports so they can have them back in and take them out for test drives?)

Luckily I have a day off tomorrow so I will be able to take the door card off and have a look as its getting really annoying now. Not too happy about leaving it all night with the window down either.

Can someone do me a favour though please and try there drivers side window with the ignition off and see if the relay still clicks. As my passenger side doesn't but the drivers side is clicking if I press it down.

Right, I've had the door card off and checked all the wiring and everything seems ok. Managed to get the window back up by connecting the battery straight onto the motor so I know the motor is fine.

I've had another look at the relays I swopped around last night and there not the relays for the window. I have removed all of the relays I can see one by one and could still hear a click when the switch was pushed down.

Anyone know for definate were the window relay is? the clicking seems to come from behind the fuse box but I can't see and relays? the only relays I can see are under the glovebox (about 6 of them)

I'm thinking it must be a faulty relay now as the switch and wiring all seem fine but I can't find the relay........help!

Matt, where is it located? is it behind the fuse box? would it be easy enough to replace?

Also is that £75 inc VAT and delivered?

actually i may have jumped the gun a bit - if its the problem you explained i think it will be the UCH control unit which is up near the bonnet release handle behind the dash - pull it down, disconnect all the wires and the re-connect them. This may sort the problem out. If not you will need a new UCH £200 - £240 ish :(

  Mazda 2, MX5 Mk2.5 Sport
You might have something there as it was when i reseated the UCH fuse the window went up the first time I couldn't shut it. I'll have a look in the daylight.

I hoping its just a dodgy connection as it first happened was early last year but then didn't do it for months until now.

Sounds like a similar problem to mine. They replaced the UCH on that and it fixed the window.

I noticed also that removing the fuse for the electric window only stopped the passenger side window working :? the drivers side one still worked even without the fuse in!

Looks like you were right Matt, definately looks like the UCH is at fault. I've tried to pull it down like you said and I can't seem to get it out. Are there any screws or anything holding it in place?

I did manage to unplug the 2 large connector blocks and actually though I'd fixed it for a little while but it started closing itself again.

Is the UCH in my car specific to the 172 or do they fit the same UCH to other models? Do you think it might be possible to fix the UCH or is it a sealed unit?

Theres a little clip holding it in - just give it a really good tug and it will pop out ( oo er )

Once you have it out unplug all connectors and disconnect your battery - reconnect it after 30 minutes - it should cure the problem. If not a new UCH will be required

The UCH control unit comes as a blank computer - once you connect it up to your car it automatically synchronizes itself into your plip key and ECU - You cannot fit a second hand one off another vehicle - it will not work. part number for a new UCH is 8200311990 £170.87

Cheers Matt, I'll give it a go. If I do need a new one is that the price from renault (exc. VAT) or your price?

I've had the UCH out today and disconnected all the wiring and its still not working so looks like I need a new one. Funny thing is though I had to slam on the brakes earlier and the relay started clicking again trying to wind the window up. I'm getting a bit fed up with having to take the door panel off to get the window back up so I'm reluctant to check it as it probably wont go back up.

Does anyone know if I can just buy a new UCH and plug it in or does it need programming by Renault after its fitted?

When I had my UCH replaced (for the same window related fault) they had to have both keys to be "reprogrammed" so I'm guessing you need Renault to do it unless someone knows how to reprogram keys...

I know its been a while since my original post but I still haven't fixed mine and I've noticed a few more posts on here about the same problem.

I now have my motor disconnected as I'm fed up of taking the door card off to wind the window up by connecting the motor directly to the battery.

The other day I noticed that the window relay clicked to close the window while the hazards were on now it doesn't do it but every now and then the relay clicks randomly whilst driving.

I noticed on one of the posts that it was a dodgy connector rather than the UCH. As it seems to be a commom fault does anyone have a definative answer?

And if it is the UCH would I HAVE to go to renault? does the UCH need to be programmed?

my windows didnt work, it was because the connector were the wires go from inside the car to the outside had not had that slide slid down properly to connect it back together again proper.

check that, open your door, and where it goes into the car and box has a clip which slides up and down, check its down tight

You dont need to goto Renault to have a new UCH fitted, as long as the place you use has a clip system and can obtain the immobiliser codes.
Most Renault specialists have a clip system, codes can be obtained from the dealer on proof of ownership ie V5 & passport or similar.

Was this ever fixed? The last couple of days my drivers window keeps opening itself.

Not what you want on the motorway when its nearly 0 degrees.

Thanks..

UCH - price can differ depending on oval plate details

For the time being just just unplug the connector / fuse whilst the window is up

True, but was the UCH the problem?

What exactly does it do?

I am wondering if my issue is the switch as I have had the door open in the heavy rain a few times recently.

Where is the UCH, is there one per door?

Thanks,

The UCH is under the glove box, its inside the black box with all the relays attached to it. I still haven't had mine replaced as I'm being tight. I've just disconnected the window motor as i got fed up of taking the door card off.

I don't know for sure but I'm fairly sure its the UCH at fault. The weird thing is it seems to be ok at the moment. The motors still not connected so I don't know for certain but I can hear the relay click when I move the button up and down. Before it wouldn't click when trying to wind the window up. Its also stopped clicking randomly whilst driving.

I'm tempted to connect it back up but sods law it will wind down on me and not go back up. I was thinking about fitting some kind of connector block in the door bin and wiring it onto the window motor. Then if it plays up I could just connect it to a 12v source to get the window back up.

Ok, well as we don't have a definite answer I am going to disconnect the door switch to see if the issue goes away before spending the money on a UCH jobby.

Cheers

I'm pretty sure its the UCH tbh but theres a slight possibility it could be the wiring. Most other renaults I know of that have the same fault had the UCH replaced under warranty which cured the problem.

My warranty ran out before it happened on mine and I really don't wan't to pay out the £400 I've been quoted to fix it.
