172 for £4k?

  Saxo VTS
Hi.

Ok, so I'm thinking of replacing the Valver soon with a new car.

I was very tempted by a 106 GTi as I think they look ace, but I was put off by the very basic interior and quite high prices.

I've seen quite a few 172's cropping up for around the £4k mark (my budget).

Is this the going rate for a decent 172 these days or are these perhaps shitters? What's all this Cup stuff too? I take it there is also a Ph1 and Ph2 version. Much difference in the price? Anything to look out for or avoid?

Cheers.

And its fast.

Thanks for the offers but I'm not lookign at buying yet.

I want to know if £4k seems a reasonable price and what the differences are.

Cheers.

I'd imagine that the only thing with a 172 for that money would mean that its a Mk1 172 and probably has a higher mileage than the more expensive ones.

From what I've read though, as long as they are serviced properly you shouldn't have anything to worry about. :D

cup is lighter and the more "racey" version with different suspension, spoiler etc.

The full fat has more toys and comfort, but some say isnt as raw to drive as a cup

i'll be looking for one at the end of the year maybe for a dedicated trackcar, just got to extend the garage first.

there are currently some for sale on here for between £4k and £5k with around 50k miles - so they don't all have to have particularly high mileage

in answer to your questions yes there is a ph1 and a ph2 172

mine is a ph1 172, the rounder lights, blue leather,
there is a ful fat 172 which is a ph2 version
the cup is a striped out version of the ph2 comes in blue or a rare silver, 15" turinis, no leather, no AC, no ABS, pretty much a track ready version which seems to be selling for cheaper
