172 fuel economy

  mk2 172
hi ive just bought a mk2 172 Clio Sport 51 plate, and ive gotta say its one of the most exciting cars ive driven, the only thing that concerns me is the fuel economy i filled it upto full the other day and have since done about 70 miles the tank is now showing 3/4 full and the computers telling me that im done about 23 mpg, ive only done town driving in it so id expect a low mpg but not this low i havent driven the car that hard at all, is this normal?

oh yeah can some one also explain what all the different readings on the dash are like mpg, trip counter, mileage etc

cheers
james

23mpg for in town driving sounds about right. Have you reset the counter?

I'd say get use to it; 100.9p I paid last night for BP Super; GRRR!!!

It's better over longer distances. Mine averages about 33Mpg.

hmmm 23mpg from town driving doesn't sound right to me - unless ur driving like a c**k. I usually get around 30-33 round town, and 36+ on motorway runs

  133/225/CLS AMG
I found my car averaged 29-32 on normal driving, if you boot it everwhere you're talking about 24mpg!!
On the motorway if you keep a constant speed (70ish) it should remain in the high 30s, I managed about 40mpg in my old 172!

  mk2 172
i actually get 25 rather than 23 that was an error but i couldnt seem to edit the post. i can honestly say i havent booted it, ill be going down the motorway on sat so i might reset the counter and see what i get, how many miles on average would you say you get to a full tank?

  Ziel Nurburgring
Track- 14mpg
Town- 32mpg
M'Way- 40+ if kept under 85.

When was it last serviced and does it have any mods?

  mk2 172
the car was last serviced in march and had since done about 7000 miles, the only mod to it is a powerflow exhaust which the bloke had fitted a week before, would that make a difference?

Mines showing 35mpg over 6 weeks worth of driving. Mainly to & from work.

23mpg do you ever use the other four gears??

  Nimbus Clio 197
34mpg for me, mianl;y just town driving, back and to to work. so 23 sounds disgraceful to me :S

  MERCEDES CLS AMG
i can get 47mpg just tapping the accelerator at about 60mph on a long run - normal round town 30 - 35mpg. If i nail the car about 22mpg

  A Grey Slab (Audi Estate)
On my old 172 the figures on my trip computer never added up used to get about 35 ish mpg but even when tank was running nearly empty it used to say I still had about 100 miles left! (Maybee if I pushed it, fair enough) Used to get about 270 -280 miles off a tank. Computer on my new 182 seems a lot more acurate.

  Mk II silver 172
Yeah my fuel gauge seems to drop rather rapidly. Ive only had the car a fortnight and was concerned by the rapid drop in the guage. Sounds like its normal then. Im getting about 31ish mpg in town, 41ish motorway but only managed 270miles motorway driving before filling up. Havent tried it just town from fill up to fill up. Seems like quite a thirsty wee beastie! Still at least its not just mine that likes a pint or 2 of the old super u/l ! ;)

agree, so the trick is to keep the top going down as slowly as possible then you deffo know by wednesday you have enough to last the week out for work and have a mere 50-60miles left in for the weekend where it feels really light a quicker, thats the way i used to do it anyway.

now i just put a £10 in everyday so im always quick and by wednesday the excess means i can skip a £5 on thursday £10 on friday = £35-£38 per week for 200 miles town/motorway/b road driving best you can imagine with current fuel prices and i still get to have fun

i thought the same thing with mine, i took the car on a test drive an it was showing 38 mpg doing around 60 they then serviced the car an gave it to me on monday. i filled it up with optimax an now i can't get the thing over 26mpg is there something wrong with the thing or is that right

  Mazda 2, MX5 Mk2.5 Sport
Mine does 37 average on a long run, 40+ if you cruise @ 80 on the m way, 27 on my normal commute to work and back and 22-23 if I take it out for a thrash.

I get about 30mpg on town driving, less if the traffic is bad, haven't had a chance to blat it down a motorway yet so don't know what I would get out of it.

Still my VR6 used to average 26mpg (if had some hefty mods though) round town and only just hit 30 odd on the motorway so it costs me less in fuel which makes me happy!

I had mine showing 67mpg the other day!
I average about 34 and can do 40 on a m'way. Lots of 'enthusiastic' driving in there as well.

Mine currently says about 33mpg and thats been mainly round town driving. Can get up to about 40 on a long trip if it's a mix of steady a-roads and motorways. I find that Optimax gives you about 1-2 extra mpg.

I'm getting about 35mpg around town in my 172 Cup, upto 43mpg or so on a longer journey with a reasonable amount of traffic about, 30mpg when "having fun" on the open roads, and then 12mpg on the track! Averages out at about 30mpg in the long run. Just remember to reset the trip computer weekly or so.

Best to calculate it the old fashioned way though, trip computer is notoriously iffy and even the petrol gauge struggles to be accurate. Often shoots down to half full within about 80 miles, then takes forever to reach empty...my Dynamique used to spend about 200 miles in the top half and then shot down to empty really quick, odd things!

sorry is there something wrong with my trip then as it still under warranty

I get about 30ish for mixed driving, pretty happy with that considering the 2 litre engine and brick like shape!
I'm having an LPG conversion next month, so will soon be enjoying 40p a litre fuel, for much the same power. :D

  Megane Mk4
I found my 172 better on fuel than my 182 counterpart..

I'd regular got MPG ratings between 35/46 Mpg in the mk1 but I'm only getting 23/35Mpg out of the new one ... Pros and cons of cars I suppose, mind you I do know the 182 is a fat little fecker and its put weight on from the 172.
but then again, true must be said that I also have the megane 225 chip in it too,

Petrol + drain anyone?? lol

Your dealer will laugh at you!

As others have said, you need to calculate it the old fashioned way, at least then you'll know exactly what you're getting.

There's also a difference between driving normally and driving economically.

I've managed to get around 350 miles out of a tank on my daily commute (16 miles each way - though a couple of small towns and twisty country roads), but to do this I was very concious of being very gentle with the throttle, limiting gear changes and keeping the revs as low as possible <- this isn't what I would really class as normal driving.

If I drive "normally" then I probably get somewhere around 290-300 to a tank.
