172 Gearbox - no drive but speedo going up.

Local chap with a 172 just had his car slip out of gear. Goes back in to gear but no drive, speedo is going up though. Where is the speedo drive in the box? I'm guessing driveshaft or diff, although the car had a new diff a year or so ago.

Nearside diff circlip has probably popped out.
