172 Gearbox Oil....what type & how much?

  Clio 172 Sport Ph2
Hi people....

Fitted a new pair of driveshafts today which meant that the lubricating contents of my box ended up in a bucket under the car.

So now I need to refill the box with some new oil & was wondering what the correct stuff is to use & also how many litres it takes!!?

Plus.....I forgot to look before I came home - wheres the drain & refill bung please?

Cheers

Lee

75w80 and 3.1 litres.

Drain plug is on the bottom of the box and ideally you want a new copper washer to make sure it doesn't leak, i've not changed a few before an they don't tend to leak but for the sake of 20p i'd get one. Fill/Level plug is on the front of the box and will be great fun.

They recommend tranself trx 75w80, last time I range a stealers they tried to tell me it was the wrong one despite me having the renault manual in front of me with it in black and white.

Theres a variety of oils avaliable from opie oils etc, I like castrol stuff seems to work well in the renault boxes i've put it in. People use royal purple and others but they're all 75w90 and i'm a bit wary of using oil not to the specific grade considering how temperamental they can be.

Thats what i've got in mine and the stuff i've used a good few times with no problems.

Does this fix the "common" leak? :)

Nope as thats the selector shaft seal where they all tend to weap a bit from. I wouldn't worry about it unless its leaking a lot.

Surely there is a fix for it :S

Not good to have a "normal leak" in a car I would think

I used Royal Purple 75w90 was the biggest mistake I have made it made the gearbox clunky and it made the syncros stick in 3rd gear so I would get a grind on change. I swapped back to 75w80 and the box is like new again. Definately dont use 75w90 IMO!!!

how level does the ground have to be when filling gearbox oil
I realise you cant be on a bleeding hill, but should be OK on a slight incline
Its either on a slight incline hard stand next to my house, or out on the street which i dont fancy
Could drive onto a bit of 4 x 2 i suppose... wheres best place to stick a level on it to suss its straight?

Or am i getting too anal about it all...

(Just realised the date of the last post.... a while back :)

Just jack the rear up a little and get it a little more level pal, obviously support the rear with axel stands like the front.

I wouldn't have the front of the car too high doing it as you'll struggle to drain it all. Also a risk of overfilling it too.

Redline MTL 75w-80.
To fill mine, I got a 1ltr pump bottle from machine mart and filled the gearbox via the breather beneath the airbox instead of having to lie on the floor filling it.

No the filler point wouldn't come out so as the redline comes in 1 US quart bottles (0.946 litres) and the pump bottle is a 1 litre capacity so put in 3 bottle.

Just doing my gearbox oil now- all drained

As I only bought 3L of the ELF stuff, should I fill the remining 100ml with the ZX1 micro treatment oil friction reducing stuff ive got- which I use with engine oil?
Some posts on here say there needs to be a bit of friction in the gearbox/
