172 gearbox problem

Gearbox feels/sounds notchy going up/down into 3rd. Have tried a fully synth gear oil but no better. Dealer says it is synchro ring and I have got a price from them to fit an exchange box (partial warranty contribution due to low mileage).

Thing is, to me the roughness and noise is coming from the stick/selector rather than the box. Is there any way that a fault with the selector could be mistaken for a synchro ring? Are they winding me up?

If not, Ill have to go for it :(

the linkage rod is solid, so any problems in the box are passed straight down the linkage up the stick

is it only coming down the gears???

Cheers Fred. Its most noticeable changing down into 3rd, but sometimes a bit rough changing up as well. When its cold Id say.

weve got the same problem on the cup at the moment, it crunches when changing down from 4th to 3rd

bit of an arse, new box time unfortunatley

  cock mobile.

Sounds like a similar problem to mine.

Im getting a new box on Thursday under warrenty.

Ive now done 28k, first noticed the problem about 24k.

well the box we put in the cup was "apparentley" only 3K old

its been in 3 weeks, and is showing signs of being buggered already

if buying second hand, always be cautious, and get the box rebuilt before installing (£150)

Mr Waddle is having/has had the same trouble. Its always 3rd by the sounds of things.

At least the dealer box gets its own warranty

Agreed. Who with, the dealer or RUK?

Get this - called Customer Services this morning, and just got confirmation that they are putting another 50% (£700) towards the cost :)

Goes in on Monday.
