172 gearbox question

Hi all, just wondering if the 172 gearbox casing is the same as a 1.2/1.4,

Another quick question, is the 172 box same as 182 box? Gear ratios and what not?

There are 3 different variants of 172 box:
Phase 1
Phase 2 with speedo drive
Phase 2 with no speedo drive (this is also the 182 box)

All 172 boxes will fit a 182, but the ph1 variant has a taller diff ratio (the gears themselves are all the same though)

You can fit the early phase 2 (or cup) box to the phase 1 as well as it has the required speedo drive, and if its a trackday car it will close up the gears a little which I think makes it drive better (unless its something like my Ph1 turbo where you want the taller diff)

My opinion is:
Ph1 gearing, good for road cars or turbo track cars
Ph2 gearing, good for N/A trackday cars, or RS2 equipped road cars where you have a huge useable rev range
