You can fit the early phase 2 (or cup) box to the phase 1 as well as it has the required speedo drive, and if its a trackday car it will close up the gears a little which I think makes it drive better (unless its something like my Ph1 turbo where you want the taller diff)
My opinion is:
Ph1 gearing, good for road cars or turbo track cars
Ph2 gearing, good for N/A trackday cars, or RS2 equipped road cars where you have a huge useable rev range
