172 gearboxes.

  Shed.
Well after looking into buying a 172, a gearbox going would be a right asspain.

Is there any way of being able to tell if the box is on the way out.. ??

notchy/crunchy when engaging 3rd gear. Although a lot of them do it ifs its excessive its something to worry about

my old one only used to do it when it cold and i shifted quickly-ish. Got a lot better when i put the correct oil in it though and it was hot

They are so picky when it comes to oil these boxes

excuse my poor english BTW

Mine started the knock when on and off the power.

Sounded like bushes were loose, but it wasn't.

mine failed as a previous owner had run the 'box dry (they leak). i knew something was up shortly after buying the car as i gave it a thorough going over and noticed that the diff seemed noisy whilst spinning the wheel as the front end was jacked up (i thought it was the diff at the time anyway).

hindsight's always a wonderful thing but, knowing what i do now, i'd have checked carefully for evidence of leaks and would have jacked it up to spin the wheels and listen for any roughness. depends upon the seller as to whether or not you'd be able to check this before buying.

worth considering anyway.

yer i think id leave the car in the garage for a day see if there was anything wring, first thing id do with the car would be to drain the oil and put new good stuff in.
