172 hot start issues

  '92 172, Lotus Elise
having a few teething problems with the conversion... mainly that it wont start up after its been running

from cold start it fires in to life easily, but just turns over and over when its a hot start

I've got a CTS from a 1.6... as they looked the same to me :quiet: - would this be causing it?

ive also got no lambdas connected yet...

any thing else it could be?

Lambdas won't be helping. Got a test meter handy? You can check if the CTS is reading correctly when hot (to a degree).

Should be:
-10c = 9.5kohms
25c = 2kohms
50c = 810ohms
80c = 309ohms
100c = 114ohms
120 = 87ohms

How could you've got no lambdas in? Any way of getting one in to try? (the upstream one)

ive made up a custom downpipe... so no lambdas.. yet! :D

i would've thought no lambdas would just make it run badly.. not not start at all!

What are you calling a hot start? As the only thing I can think of is that when starting from cold the ECU is running open loop and ignoring the lambdas but a hot start its running closed loop (iirc) so would wan't the lambdas for mixture regulation but I would've though it'd still start.

The crank position sensor is a frequent causer of non starting as well.

yeh thats what i abbreviate it as, but what has the CTS got to do with non starting when hot?

i was thinking he might be abbreviating cam timing sensor or something along those lines for what i call CPS (crank position sensor) as these can cause starting issues when they get warm.

Thats why I mentioned the CPS as they have a history of hot start problems when they're fecked. Only mentioned the CTS as it dictates whether the ECU uses the cold or hot start map.

ah right didnt realise it had 2 maps for hot or cold start, every days a school day :)

cts = coolant temp sensor
cps = crank position sensor

is the cps known for failing then? i just bought it :(

can't really see what can go wrong with one?

apparently the new CPS from reno require a bit of loom as they changed the connector?

i've got mine plugged straight into the engine loom

yeah if you unplug the coolant temp sensor its a sod to start when hot
see if you lost your spark and inj. pulse that will tell you if its the cps

  LY 182
yeah pull the lead off the coil pack and just lift it up a tad
see if the spark jumps between

lol dont be a tart,

its fine, if you are scared use insulated pliers

in seriousness though its ok other than a small chance of a little shock

It'll make you jump! But thats about it unless you've got a pacemarker or a weak heart lol. Just watch your fingers and you'll be fine. A spare lead and plug would be handy here.

the connector was renewed as iirc it would let water into the connection

Might not be two complete different maps but it has to richen the mixture up bigtime for cold start.

oh yeh im aware it would richen the mixture up (as with any other vehicle on cold start)

it was the 2 maps i was curious about lol

yeh my new cps sensor came with a new plug and a bit of loom
