172 inlet manifold gasket

  Various/172
Hi guys im a new member and i have just bought one of these little pocket rockets with all good intentions of destroying the poor thing around a track but first things first i need to do a little bit of servicing.

I have found that its started to suffer with a bit of a lumpy idle and couple of flat spots low in the rev range it seems to be getting progressively worse i'm currently using it for my commute to work, after speaking to the previous owner he said he's changed the leads and oil but not the plugs so finding out you have to remove the inlet i'm going to have a bash.. What could possibly go wrong :D

Anyway i cant seem to get the inlet manifold gasket from Renault (its on back order) and there's about three different types according to my local auto shop when he puts the reg into his abbacuss ..

Is it possible to re use the old gasket and as im not a fully fledged member i cant read the step by step guides is there anything i should be careful with?

Otherwise great site and keep up the good work!

I changed my plugs and reused the gasket - has been fine with no issues, just make sure it lines up correctly.

Welcome mate, yes if the old gasket is in good condition then you can re use it but it's always better to buy a new one - best thing is join up - its only 12quid and gives you a guide for pretty much all you will ever need :)

Thanks for that guys i will join up! i whipped it off last night and its really straight forward actually isnt it, one thing i did find was one of the bolts on the inlet which is next to the coil pack isnt tightening so must have been threaded from some previous work, doesnt seem to be leaking any air but im going to have to do that as it will niggle me...

i sprayed a can of EGR valve/injector cleaner (well thats what it said on the tin) into the breather system, always a bit sceptical about these kind of things doing more harm than good but the chap in the shop was a good salesman!

ll in all its running near on perfect now so pleased with that ;) so thanks for the advice!
