172 irrational insurance?

I quoted myself on a 172 (ph1) when I turned 21, and was plesantly suprised that with my mum as a named driver I returned a quote of £800 TPTF.

Now I have found a car I intend to buy and will be 22 by the time I insure it, and the lowest quote I can find in my own name is £1400? SRS WTF?

Now my stats aren't brilliant,

  • Been driving 4.5 years
  • 0 NCB due to only ever being named driver
  • Good postcode
  • Car on drive
  • No accidents, points or anything of the sort
Because of this I am considering insuring the 172 in my mums name also as it just makes more sense.... And before the "fronting brigade" come and try and spank me, take a little listen....

I work full time, the car only gets used by me at weekends and some evenings (around two a week) my mum is unemployed currently so has the opportunity to use the car 7 days a week, uses it to go shopping etc in the week.

She does have a car of her own, but does not like driving it because the visibility is crap (tigra) and its an auto.

So would you really call this "fronting"?!??

It might look like fronting even if it isn't as she has her own car already. I wouldn't risk it personally, but that's just my view. How much was the difference?

Is that £1400 TPFT??

Yeah Vish thats my prob, I wouldnt want it to look like fronting, but then again if I'm at work 5 days a week I think I could argue its pretty unlikely for me to be the majority driver?

Yeah and its £1400 TPFT they want? I'll be 22 in like two weeks for god sake!!?!? I couldn't believe it!

Its a ph1 172, I've valued at £2000 because it makes no odds really, I don't understand how with 4.5 years driving experience (admittedly I have no no claims) it can be that much?

With my mum as main driver it is £800, so £600 difference!

What engines in the Tigra?

Could insure that in your name and then get your mum to insure the 172 in hers...

But tbh thats a pain in the arse itself.

I'd just wait and build up NCB on the 1.2

The tigra is a 1.4 so thats not a bad idea that.... cheers!

I think I have like 5 months insurance left on my current car, so I guess I'll have to ask about changing the car on the policy and see how much they want... (got a feeling that could go south) lol!

She drives the tigra less than she drives my car tbh, only when mine isnt there.

Pretty big difference. Have you tried the specialists, like Adrian Flux, Greenlight, the few on here, etc?

Or the company who you're a named driver with at the moment? Any way to use named drivers NCB? Or try to arrange a discount with them to equal the 4yrs of claim free driving?

Otherwise, insure the Tigra in your name, and earn some NCB then after a year or two, put the 172 in your name.

I'm yet to try the specialists mate, but I'm just trying to get a decent basic price then i'll have a go with the specialists.

If I can get a price of around 800 I'll be happy enough. I'm just worried about what my current insurer will say about wanting to change to a 172! LOL! Cheers for the advise so far anyways chaps.

Any idea why its so expensive though? I live just outside london in kent, down a quiet road that leads to nowhere but where it came form!

Who have you tried? Also, have you checked what fully comp would be? Some companies charge more for TPFT for some strange reason.

Zero NCB and <25 y/o male sounds like a nightmare to insurance companies in a stupidly fast small girls car....

Put an ITG filter in and call Greenlight... Modified policies FTW !

I have tried the three big search engines, comparethemarket, gocompare and confused....

I'll give everything a go now, on all three of them, then its onto the specialists.

But its not like i'm a new driver and have no driving experience.... :(

It does have some small mods anyways Rob so can always try to use them, prices good then? I've never needed to have anything to do with specialists so I dont know anything about them or even who they are really, other than flux or greenlight?

In my experience specialist is the only way to go for young people, all online quotes I did were way over priced.

Give them a ring, got nothing to lose

Edit: Some specialists: Flux/Greenlight/Brentacre/Chris Knott

I know you've been driving for a while but with 0 NCB thats all they see... :dead:

When I did my first year with Greenlight.. they were so much cheaper than all but one company. I think I paid 660 FC (all in one go) and there was only one company who would do it for about 700, but the policy wasn't as good... Everyone else wanted at least 1-1.2k

Give them a call on Monday if you can.. it might be good, it might be crappy.. but there's only one way to find out !

Make sure you try Elephant direct on their site if you haven't, been cheapest for me on both my Clios.

^ As he said!

Comparison sites are crap IMO. I saved £300 from the same company quoted directly compared to the quote from confused one year.

Just tried fully comp on go compare and got £1200! LOL! Looks like FC is cheaper!? I'll try the rest in a minute.

Will try some specialists during the week and see how I get on.

Nothing will stop me!!

£1200 FC isn't that bad. You have 0NCB, that is your problem! Add a few mature people onto your policy, should bring it down!

Mum is on it at that price, but she is currently unemployed and I'm not sure if that's helping!

£1200 isnt too bad I know, but considering I've been paying like £300 on my pov spec clio its quite a jump!!!

Its ok, fully comp is actually cheaper! (I have NO idea)

TBH, I'm not too bothered about fully comp, If I f**k up and destroy my car thats my fault, as long as insurance covers other people its cool with me tbh.

I know they're not cheap, and at 17/18/19 whatever I could understand it being so high, I just think at 22 this is a little extortionate!

Zippo, I'll try on the street, maybe they think my drive will collapse?

  330Ci (Fail)Sport
I think that's a decent quote mate, esp with no NCB.

I'm in Berks, and mine is around £900 FC with 5yrs driving, 4yrs NCB, 1 fault accident and claim in 04, 1 non fault in 05 and an 3 points in 04. That's with Adrian Flux, all mods declared and unlimited mileage.

Shop about some more, try websites direct and defo call the specialists. The specialists are fantastic if you plan to mod during that time, think a couple of companies still say no mods for under 25s and for some others that allow them, expect big price changes.

  Clio 200
as said in another thread I am only 880 on a 59 late 200, 22 1 year ncb, car on the street , shitty postcode 2 claims 1 non fault theft claim and 1 accident of my own.

search about direct with insurance companys, put your mum a named driver it will bring the price down a bit
