172 Noise

  Renaultsport 172
2000 W Reg 172, 69k. Owned it for a year, since 65k.

Recently ive been noticing a noise that I can only describe as like a jet engine on a boeing 747 (slight exaggeration) when hitting 60 mph in 3rd moving up to 4th (noise stays moving up into 5th gear too). When I drop to under 55mph(ish) the noise goes away. I can understand that some people may want a car that sounds like an aeroplane, but this is a new noise that wasnt there when I got it so im quite concerned.

Hard to tell where noise is coming from but feels like its from the back, possibly exhaust. Ive got what looks like a Magnex Back Box 6x4 oval tailpipe (was on it when I bought it).

It sounds like the normal engine sound, only noticably louder. I know the magnex is a loud exhaust, but this is not normal. Car is due a 72k service, and possibly a new cambelt. Could it be the sound is due to a wearing cam, or more likely a wearing exhaust?

Also noticed a bit of a flat spot in 3rd at around 40 - 60mph, feels like there should be a bit more power than there currently is. Not sure if this is related?

Opinions welcome

Cheers
Brad

No, once it kicks in its pretty static. The noise fluctuates very slightly, but this is not related to any changes in speed.

This noise is coming on at low speeds now (20-30mph +). Im scared to drive it.

Does this still sound like the gearbox oil needing replaced? Is it easy/cheap to do? (got a 72k service on wed inc timing belts, plus new rear axle bushes which is costing me a fortune!)

bump.

going in for service tomorrow. Is it worth askin to change gearbox oil or better to wait until after service to see if noise goes away from usual service work?
