172 or 172 cup???

  Iceberg 172
Hi guys,

having owned a cup which has now been written off I'm looking for another one.

I was planning on getting a normal 172 and putting my turinis and coilies on it.

Am I going to notice much of a difference between the cup and the normal 172???

I mean, the only differences in terms of performance is weight, wheels and suspension. So if the wheels and suspension have been changed surely a few extra kilos aren't going to be noticeable on normal road driving???

I have no intentions of putting it on a track to push it to it's limits.

Thanks.

Braking too. ABS could be handy for you if the last car is anything to go on lol. I doubt you will notice any difference on the road at all.

Some people prefer the Cup because it's more 'raw'.

In reality, they are all so close performance wise, you'll never notice a difference. There will be a bigger gap between a good and a bad one, than a Cup/172/182 etc. Especially as you won't be going on track.

I love the Cup colour and of course the wheels, but I'd want xenons/ac/leather etc.

I wouldn't decide firmly on either. See what you find when you're looking thats in good condition, good miles, good price etc. Depends what colour you want..

  Iceberg 172
See I really liked the Colour of the Cup... but then again I love Iceburg Silver (as it's similar to the Avus Silver of my old Audi TT).

I'd prefer to have xenon's / ac / leather but recently i've seen a few threads about the Cup being a lot better... TBH I did buy it because I thought it looked great (colour / wheels) but now I have the wheels and coilies I think the Iceburg would look better!!

Iceberg = Boring.

A Mk2 172 is the most 'soft' version of the range

;)

Standard, yes. But he's not talking standard. I'm sure a 172 on decent (and I mean decent ;)) coilovers would be more fun than a standrd cup. With the added benefit of a few comforts. Or if weights an issue, get a ph1. Similar weight to a cup, but you get to keep ac. Mines 999kg with reclining buckets, and the rear seats out. And you get a cable throttle, which is just better.

  Iceberg 172
Nah... I couldn't have a phase 1... not a lover of the interior.

Iceberg I think is stunning... so subtle. But with a bit of lowering, and a set of turini's and a CF splitter I think it'll look the best of the bunch imho!!!

Erm they're k tec coilies... so not Bilsteins or KW's but I don't think they're that bad are they!!?? I loved them on my cup... nice and comfortable consider how low it was in comparison to other cars i've had on coilies plus they handled excellently imo. But i've not tried others!

The cup is better because I have one FACT!

Seriously tho, i would drive both. I wanted a cup because i like the idea of it being more "raw", but i understand that there aint much in it really. Plus of all the things extra on a 172 the only thing I wanted was the ABS, but so far i aint needed it, and i love the way the cup looks.

Agree!

When i was back in the market for a cheapy, regular 172's were never even considered. Think after owning my Cupped 182 it left me feeling a bit 'numb' i suppose. The only MK2's of interest to me are the Cup (172, and 182) and Trophy. Weird huh

I'd get a 172. I've gone from a FF spec to Cup spec and I really miss the xenons, auto lights. Looking at the Cup and 172 I'd deff get a 172 then source the parts I wanted like Cup spoiler and Turinis.

  Iceberg 172
I've got a written off Cup on my driveway!

So I'll be taking off the Turini's, Cup Spoiler, Coilovers, SS Stealth Exhaust and the Aero Wipers I fitted 2 days before writting it off! I also have a brand new Momo Team 300mm steering wheel which I was going to fit on the weekend but I wrote the car off on the friday!

So the only thing i'll need is the splitter... which I'll get the CF one from K Tec.

Maybe in my opinion, a hot hatch should be no nonsense. Big engine little car, no fuss, done. Think thats why i like the Cup spec, be it 172/Trophy. Just appeals to me for some reason

Ohh yeah, you're the chap who wanted the 197? I'd be getting the 172 personally. I raced a Cup with rear removed in my 172 and it was pretty even. We had alot of races and never more than half or so car length in it.

Why weren't they considered?

When I first looked for a 172 I never considered a normal one as I wanted the Turini's etc but couln't be arsed in buying them seperately (I hate starting off with a car i'm not totally happy with).

But now I have all the "goodies" to go straight on one my mind is in a different place and I think if I got a normal 172 I'd be getting the best of both worlds... Cup looks with 172 luxuries.

I'm never going to take it to a track and I'll doubt i'll be able to reach it's limits on a road and if I was that bothered about the weight of my car the first thing i'd do is go on a bloody diet myself! lol.

My last car was a Polo which was stripped out with 2 fixed buckets. AC, CC, ABS was removed and a 280bhp 1.8t engine fitted. So I know exactly where you're coming from.

But I gguess as a daily i need some comfort in my life hence getting rid of the polo!

If your talking rear seats, your bathroom sponge will weigh more ;)

Is that to me???

I had thought about getting a 197 but I'd be using the cash I have as a large deposit and the rest on finance which I just don't want to do atm.

Totally. I can see it from both sides. I have a van for work, and only use the Cup for pleasure really, so i suppose it can be a bit more 'raw' My pet hate is loud boooomy zorts :dead:

Lol, yeah it was to you.

I'd be using some of the cash to reduce your insurance premium that's for sure ;)

How much can you buy the car back for?

On another note:

Gaz.... You make me LOL with all this talk of Cups being "raw". The way you go on about them is as if it's the Flinstone's car.

Has to be a 172 cup but i would say that tho but I think its the best colour i dont miss a/c, leather seats i would like as im not a fan of the pov spec seats but they do the job.

But again a nicely spec'd 172 with some tasteful mods would look good too,

  Iceberg 172
Well yeah that's what I'm worried about... 22 but now with No NCB and 1 accident... could be interesting to insure the 172! lol.

Not sure how much they want for it... I just know that i'll be taking everything i want off of it before the salvage man comes to collect it!

Colour is the only thing that still has my attention with the cup.

But the thought of putting xenons / leather into a cup and still not having AC puts me off!

My minds made up!

Trophy/182cup is pretty much same spec as a ph1, bar the seats. No xenons, manual ac. Agree on the ph1 interior being s**t. But then I spend my evenings with the wife, not lounging in the car at McD's ;).
