Call me boring but thats my opinion.

Also the 172 is pretty near to that old skool feel for a modern hatch.

Cage the valver for a couple of hundred and itll be mega safe. AC is for girls and the valver has ABS. Not that Ive ever managed to get mine to engage even though its running DS2500 pads.[/QUOTE]Again mate its just my 2 pence worth. I see a 172 as a better and newer car than a valver. You and others have different views which is fine. Isnt ABS only an option and hard to find?

No mate. Virtually every valver Ive seen has ABS even though it was an option.

Get a 172.the extra power is there and you will like the drive of a new rust free car,if your an anorack then get a valver so you can spend your weeknds fixing it

Id stick with me valver tbh. The 172/182 is better for everyday stuff and its fast but if your a hardcore country lane basher get a valver. You get so much feedback from them, they sound feckin awesome and on some twistys you wont get left behind by a 172/182 either. Only on the long straights. They are very rewarding to drive.

They did save themselves loads of money, they used the suspension components that the 19 valver uses :)

Being a mk1 172 owner my answer for a track car is...neither. Buy a 19 valver for 500 quid, uprate some bits and it will be loads of fun.

But, equally, you wont get stung for thousands in depreciation when you come to sell a valver as theyre already as low as theyre going to go really.
172s are still dropping in value and will continue do so for a while yet...

equally you wont need to repaint the rear arches etc on a 172 like you would with most valvers due to their age. Tbh 172s have found their bottom value now. Valvers can still be seen going for 3/3500 for late minters the cheapest 172s ive seen are about 4500 and up for early high milers. They wont drop below valver money so theres not any more movement left IMO.

Almost everything can be had for a grand in the end, its just a question of time and mileage...there are only a few exceptions, exotics, classics, limited editions but most mainstream cars end up in a lay-by with a For Sale sign in the window at £950 eventually LOL even 172s will in a few years. Realistically most valvers can be had for a grand or a bit more, Willys hold their value because they are a recognised classic and I doubt something like a Willy with under 100k and good history will ever dip below around 4 grand. Same as Escort Cossies hold steady at over 10 grand etc.

To get back to the question, it depends what you want. A valver is a good choice as a track day toy. Its a decent everyday motor as long as you dont mind pretty crap fuel consumption, a lot of servicing/maintenance and no toys except electric windows. Plus its not exactly fast compared to hot hatches nowadays either. Lovely cars to chuck around though. If you want an all rounder thats fast, handles nice, AND is fully loaded with air con, airbags, decent interior etc, then its got to be a 172.

Ive got a 182 and a Valver at the mo. Jumped in the Valver after the driving the 182 earlier on and it still feels like great fun, and you feel so connected with the road as someone mentioned earlier with the feedback.

People saying that down a country road you couldnt lose a Valver in a 172 is probably true to a certain extent in real world driving, however the guy in the valver with be working his b****cks off to keep it in the power band and make up the deficit for the massively inferior brakes.

If you want a fun car to mod and for short blasts, save yourself some money and get a valver. If you want something thats easy to go quick in, eats the miles and should be more hassle free, get the 172.

Yes that reminds me Lucas, youre right about the driving feel in a valver. It was the first motor I ever had where you felt like you were part of it when you were really putting the hammer down - feet and hands were the front wheels, arse was the rear of the car.

Is it just me being a girly whimp or can I simply not feel this in mine at the moment? the whole setup feels very tired yes, and Im moving to a willy track asap but I have more confidence throwing the works van into a corner than the valver!

Ive owned a Cup and currently own a Valver. The differences are prominent and so it really depends on what youre after.

If you want a more usable car that you could lend to your girlfriend or just hop in, turn the key and go for a rag then get a 172/182. If you want a full driving experience that can consume more time than you can imagine (if you want it to) then get a valver/willy/hybrid and tailor its setup to you. Its bound to be more rewarding in the end...

My choice - 182 Trophy anyday. Trouble free, warrenty covered, usable super car that will match most things you come up against (without having to check the temp /oil guages every few miles) but tame enough to let my mum run down the shops in it...
