172, PH1 or PH2?

  320d
I had the same choice and went for the ph1.

Looks nicer, more of an old school aggressive luck rather than the more bland ph2. Driving wise I've only driven ph1's so can't comment.

More chance of finding a decent ph2 though as they're newer and more were made, although you could argue ph1 is more of the enthusiasts model so generally better looked after.

ph1 all the way. but with a phase 2 rear bumper and lights

gear knob is the nicest thing ever made by mankind

  mk8Fiesta ST,172 cup
iv had a cup and now own a ph1, both great cars, but i think the fact the ph1 is more aggressive looking and very rare (around here anyway, and mine is a flamer) i feel its more of a niche car than the ph2, and im really enjoying ownership.

  Ph1
The ph2 looks too much like the out going models where as if you see a ph1 behind you you can instantly tell its a Sport, same at the back infact.

Ph2 just has a more refined look. Its a bit like Escort RS turbo series one VS series 2. The S1 just looks miles more ''Hot hatch'', same apply's with the Sport

  Black 172
The PH1's have the 90's look about them, they just look old and dated now, whereas the PH2's look much more modern and I love that front grill...

Look like a boy racer in an old banger = PH1
Look like a normal person in a sleek car = PH2

Ph2 ftw.

I love mine.

I don't get how a ph1 and ph2 are really different cars, isn't it all the same engine running gear and chassis, just the shell thats different?

the shells the same, its the 15" wheels that make it for me, they make a massive difference, i drove one on 16s and it drove like a ph2! but with a cable throttle!

i agree with most on here, the ph2 looks much better

if your blind!

Right, so it drives that much better with just 15's.

If that was the case wouldn't Renault put 15's on their updated better looking hot hatch?

As daft as it sounds it does make a difference. My VTR handled much better on the standard 14" VTR wheels than it did the 15" wheels i had. The lower profile just made it that bit more twitchy.
The bigger profile tires soaked all those little bumps up.

Regards your argument for the later one's i doubt they'd ever fit 15s to their 'sporty' car which is bigger. It'll look like it's on pram wheels.

The market wants bigger wheels, they dont drive as well though.

Lord Faulks @TDF/Trackgroup drove the birds to the MOT last month and in his own words,"Fred and Warren build a good `un here.. I shouldn`t have sold it"

contemplated putting a Ph2 front end on but side by side, the Ph1 looks purposeful! the Ph2 looks styled.. purposeful > style!!

Relax bud, we all know the best Mk2 made was the 172 Cup, which kind of makes this argument irrelevant, that being a phase 2 :)
