172 proper £ mods

  EK9 + Mfactory gearing..

come the spring, maybe sooner, those who care nothing for warranty and have the means and funds, will have the choice of 2 conversions, first; that pioneer roamers throttle body conversion, rough guess at total cost going on other less proven tuning company prices maybe 3-4kish, how long it atkes to fit? a lot less than the first one eh, those who have seen the car in the flesh will know the quality {ooh the noise}, second will be the "mexican" turbo conversion weighing in at 6kish total cost, according to reports the kit costs 3.3kish, it takes a week to fit, and fitting costs 3k which seems a lot but having not seen it i cant judge. in the meantime head n cams is up first for me at 1.5kish, i know of 2 ppl who have had this done and they are a couple short of 200break, more importantly torque is right up, i was hoping to squeeze as much out of the engine b4 bolting on some proper money. so for those in the know...if u were handy with a set of spanners, had the room and access to mechanics tools is it possible to do the turbo urself, if you bought the kit, [apart from the ecu] or is it too much/technical work? views on any of the above welcome , a lot of talk has gone on about tuning for the 172/cup and now here it is almost, it looks good eh.

How strong are the boxes? (you may need to purchase the 6spder for the megane rs)

Turbo route and the tb route both require a new ecu in some form

Unless the megane uses (yeah right) the same loom.

Thought the standard clutch was rated at 200bhp...could be wrong tho... so major bhp upgrades could be costly in other areas. IE brakes!!

Bastid to change too...engine and box out!!!

Since the megan lump is a turboed F4R 172 lump which shares loads of components with the 172 I cannot see it not fitting although space for then turbo will have to be found. However I dont belive the 6 spped box will fit someone posted here saying the boxes wont go in the Clio easily you could make it fit but it would be big money you might as well buy a racing box (Getrax I think).

The standard box seems good for close to 300hp but only with care the racing boxes sound be fine with 250hp as they will be designed to deal with that sort of power under race conditions.

Also a new clutch is needed at 280hp but as with the gearbox care will have to be taken. I think the R5 clutch fits for uprated jobs.

If your going to spend £6k on the Clio why not get a racing box and clutch and 75hp nitrous. Or just get the N2O and get the biggest bottle you can which would be good for a while.

For 6k Im sure some tunning company would alo drop a 2nd engine in for you so 332hp and no worries about breaking clutches. Also if you want to spend more on the twin engine setup you can go down the cheaper routes for power. Whereas a turboed setup cannot get much more power.

Or how about a tunned motorbike engine in the Clio the Hyabushi engine can be turboed for a few grand to 440hp plus you can stick 1.4 liter badges on the side. The motorbike engine would I guess be smaller and lighter so better handling rater than a heavy 2 liter engine with a turbo on it.

As how to turbo the engine yourself you could have ago but since there a kit out there with no problems for what seems like a resonable price bearing in mind the cost of the parts you would need to buy to get an equal setup it seems a waste of money and time.

Im thinkin of the fun a twin engined turboed hyabushi engine Clio would be.:)
