172 race car 5th gear crunch rebuilt box

Hi guys,
My car has developed a crunch when going into 5th (3rd and 4th ar fine), if I change really slowly I can select 5th without crunching.
The gearbox was rebuilt last year by a specialist (previous owner) and it’s covered about 500miles since.
Any ideas what it could be, is it a box out job?
Thanks

If it’s been fully rebuilt and it’s doing that after less than a year, I’d be taking it back to whoever built it.

Thanks Dan, as I said the box rebuild and gripper was paid by the previous owner, I haven’t contacted the builder yet, but can do as he is on here!😂

Sorry, my bad. I didn’t see the previous owner bit.

in that case your only option is to have it rebuilt. The builder and you don’t have any form of contract so it’s not his problem. Technically speaking.

In addition, there is no knowing how / what was done to it after it being rebuilt.

Could have been slammed into gear by a ham fisted buffoon everyday. Or it could have had the wrong oil put in it etc. Based on a recent post on here, could even have had coolant put in as gearbox oil substitute. 🤣

So it’s not really the builders problem, as noted above.

In answer to your question, it sounds like a box out refurb job by the sounds of it. Synchro probably, but it could be other stuff.

Is it running a different gear selector (like a PMS etc) and have you checked it’s not that causing problems?

Hi Cub,

Yes it does have a PMS shifter, and no its not been slammed into gear by a baffoon, only me!! Cant you take the end casing off to get at 5th gear like you could with my old Peugeot BE3 box? (sorry new to Renaults)

From how you’ve described it, it sounds like the synchro but it’s worth checking the PMS setup once it’s all been put back together.

I don’t think you can get to the gears without the whole box coming out, but @NorthloopCup, @Scrooge and @Romanian Tyre Fitter can advise better than me.

Don’t worry, the ham fisted buffoon may have been prior to your ownership 🤣

It’ll be that PMS shifter. All boxes I build get new synchros from 3rd to 5th as well.

For some reason they’re proper finicky to get right going into 5th. Seen a lot do the exact same thing.
I dont even have a pms shifter and mine was a complete nause to get set up right so it doesn’t crunch in to 5th.

I've had issues with 5th on mine, it's a northloopcup built unit installed by AW motorworks. AW have had it back once and it's better, but fast changes into 5th, particularly when it's hot, can still provoke a slight crunch. Next weekend I'm upgrading to Redline MT90.
I'm also very cautious about 5th gear changes now. They're always done nice and slow...

Cheers guys, appreciate the help as always, I’ll try and adjust the PMS shifter, and let you all know👍🏻

Oil and the pms shifters are the biggest problems you’ll come up against mate.

Every build I do I always state Redline MTL or MT90.

Hahahahahahaha.
And I thought I was dumb when I grabbed a 1l of engine oil by accident and shoved it in my old box 😂
Lots of guys on the Trafic/Vivaro pages run engine oil on their gearboxes. It’s really common.
