172 running problems after belts changed

Car  Renault Clio 172
Hello ive been on here a while but not posted anything, unfortunately my first post is a problem as recently I changed the timing belt on my 172 ph1 and since then the car hasn't been running right at all sometimes cutting out on me, I marked the pulleys up with tippex prior to removing the old belt and the marks line up and I also locked the engine at the flywheel with a screwdriver so nothing could have moved. Im stuck on what could be causing this rough running and any advice would be great:cool:

I don't know where to begin with this one apart from its all wrong, timing will be out that's why it runs like a dog.

Well ive checked the timing and it lines up so I cant see that being the problem, ive done timing belts on plenty of cars before so know how to do them

Advice? take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Sorry Bunta, but you must use more task specific tools than a screwdriver and a marker. That was a sabotage what you did:(

Troll

anyone that's used this forum for a week will know that the belts on these are not a tipex job.

But if you did use that method. Best of luck.

Im going to re do it today to see if I can find any problems, I can't see it being the timing because like I said the marks line up fine and I've re checked it twice, it doesn't seem to have lost any power because I raced my mates mk1 focus rs and could only just keep up like before

Cut the guy some slack maybe hes used the wrong method but achieved the correct end results. as long as the crank pin slots in and the horshoe goes in at the same time then all is good.

If its not running right maybe youve missed a sensor that needs to be plugged in theres a few you need to dissconect to get access to the belts. VVT, air temp, map e.t.c

Just because you TipEx the existing positions relative to the pinned crank doesn't mean that a new belt, when correctly tensioned up, will allow the sprockets to be in precisely that previous position (Remember that full degree's are also measure in Minutes and Seconds and it only takes a Minute to be wrong). Then there's other factors to take in to account such as the existing positions being bang on correct in the first place either so he's potentially made a bad situation worse.

I'm all for people DIY'ing a timing belt change on these but facts are facts - you cannot circumvent the process or deviate from using the tools and get it bang on right.

Re did the whole job again today checking everything step by step, still ran rough and stalled when it warmed up, it pulled fine when on full throttle though so took it to my friends garage for him to do the job again for me tomorrow morning, told him the symptoms etc. Got code reader out which showed lambda sensor which was weird because dash light wasn't on, anyway swapped lambda over and its now running fine just strange how it went faulty straight after changing the belts

Unless your friend has all the correct timing tools it will still be wrong. Do a search on here and you'll see thread after thread with the same problem.

I'd recommend you take it to a specialist to make sure the timing is correct because I can bet it's out. You need 3 Renault timing tools when doing the belts, it's not as simple as tipex and a screwdriver.

No need to check it the lambda was at fault, just coincidence it went faulty straight after doing the belts but thanks for the help

Just listen to these guys and have your timing checked even if the car seems ok! Why not have maybe 5-10 bhp more and a 100% working engine?
Read this http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?510521-cambelt-problems-(local-garages) and you'll know why it's crucial to do it the PROPER WAY
Oh and this is one of the jobs where you MUST use a torque wrench and be aware that the values are not correct in autodata for example
Good luck!

Hi Bunta did you pick up your new cup yesterday? I was talking to you at the shell garage, get some pics up mate.
