172 shock replacement

  Clio 172
I have a 172 (non-cup) with Eibach Sportline springs. My shocks have given up and need replacing. I use the 172 as a daily drive but use it for a number of track days and am happy to sacrifice a bit of comfort for better track performance.
My question is, are cup shocks the best way to go? And do I need to change the top mounts at the same time, and if so what are your suggestions?
Thank you

I have a 172 cup with cooksports springs and new cup shocks, plus black series polybushing all round. In short, I'd hate to drive this as a daily, thankfully it's just a track/competition/DIY toy for me. Although it's a fun drive on track and sprints, there is still too much body roll for my liking, hence I'm upgrading to coilovers.

In your case, I'd expect having the right sprung coilovers with adjustable dampening might be a better option for adjustability when on and off track, but I'm sure someone better informed will be along soon to comment...

I think if you are serious about doing track days then coilovers are really the way to go. I think you will struggle to control the roll through high speed corners especially if using sticky tyres. As you use the car daily I would go for the most comfortable coilover option, the Bilstein B14's and then use a rear ARB to increase the roll stiffness at the back - compensating for the softer rear spring setup.

The Rear ARB to go for is the Pure Motorsport one as its properly adjustable due to the way it mounts to the chassis.

I've gone from new cup shocks and h&r springs to bilstien b14 coilovers on my daily........ Just go bilstien imo they're just a revelation in all honesty and in real terms not that much more expensive if you trawl the second hand market. I paid under half a grand for them.

Though a word of caution. If you are going to strip out the car completely because race car; the Bilstein B14 rear springs do not go low enough.

I did have B14’s on my previous car and really wasn’t too impressed with them.
I took the 172 to Thruxton on Monday and had a great time with the Eibach sportlines, however the dampers died during the day!
Sorry should have said I already have a Whiteline ARB.
I don’t want to spend a fortune on it, I just want it to be good cheap fun.....

They run a 400lb front spring and 275lb rear so for track use need a heavier duty ARB to get the turn in.
If you have a daily you have to compromise one way or another.

The other option is to go for something like the BC racing DS coilovers. Downsides are the weather protection is not as good but you can run stiffer springs.
8kg front spring equate to 450lb. I wouldnt run stiffer on a road car.

I spray my BC coilovers with corrosion block to help survive the road salts and grime
