172 standard power increase?

  BMW E46 330i Touring
I saw a 172 today, and the guy said when he bought it, it was still standard but he had it rolling roaded at 184bhp.

He since fitted a Viper Induction kit with cold air feed to the front fog light 'hole' and this has increased the Max Power to 190-odd, with a rolling road graph to prove it. He's fitted a custom exhaust which has slightly decreased the power due to the nature of the system being very restrictive because of the spare wheel, but still impressive figures due to the minimal mods...

I know that the engine responds well to a range of revs at an early stage of its life, but will it have this dramatic an effect? The graph was genuine and it certainly felt a far bit quicker than standard...

rolling road graphs don't mean bugger all, unless you have a standard power run before even touching the car

best i've seen out of a 172 is 185bhp (171bhp done on standard setup on same RR)

using Viper, Superchips remap and cat back exhaust

172's like large bore exhaust system at least 2.5inch throughout

hard to explain, but you could put 2 completley standard cars onto a RR and get 2 completley different figures

if you want a good figure from a RR, pump your tyres upto 40psi, that alone will give you 10bhp!!!

i got a 172 cup any advice to get some more power out of it . without breaking the bank ..........................

Depends what you define as braking the bansk. IK a big exhaust and decat are the cheapest then say manifold work and remap and you should be about 185hp maybe a bit more.

  Fiesta ST Stage 3
For low cost power try a Panel filter / cat back exhaust / good ht leads and a good service .

get the inlet manifold matched... helps quite a bit!

decat also helps

smooth intake pipe a good idea.

Viper also good or itg

I seem to remember a discussion on these a while back talking about the benefits of the Hillpower one and I am sure you or Ben rated them as cosmetic only as the flow of air through them wasn't that great to make any noticable difference
I could be talking out of my arse though ;)
