172 starting problem- backfire?

Car  172
Hi there was wondering if anyone could help me

- i have a clio 172 and it sometimes wont start when hot but is ok when cold. I turn the key and takes a long time and often backfires then cuts out while the key is still turned. It sounds like its gona start it just wont catch. It will then usually start after a while- maybe because it has cooled down - i duno? Ive had a test done to find faults on the car engine management didnt find anything.

Sorry about the crap description im crap with cars. Help me please im really stuck :( x

Sounds like a problem that i have actually, it happens very rarely for me to be bothered about to be honest. I don't have a solution for it I'm afraid.

Does it happen a lot?

Most common fault would be the TDC Sensor, its located above the gearbox bell housing and is half moon in shape. Two 10mm bolts hand one electrical connection and its off.

Usual symptoms are cutting out when hot and refusing to start!

About £30 from renault. IIRC

i would advice getting the cambelt check as this may have slipt, backfirering is to do with timing so id definately get the time checked aswell:D

hope that helps you im sure that will solve your problems:)

TDC Sensor as it will control the ignition timing! Change this as it's a relatively cheap fix.

thanks so much my dad is down fitting a new tdc sensor as we speak will let you know if it fixes it x

if youve had a dyno done on the engine management then the tdc sensor would of shown up as a fault if it is that, which is why i questioned the timing and cambelt???
