172 tuning plans your advise please guys!!!

hi everyone i am thinking on making some tuning changes to my vehicle and was wondering what everyone thoughts are based on actual experience and all round knowledge:

which is the best induction kit for the car panel? carbon filter or are k and n just as good or maybe green?

exhaust system? which is the best for overall gains quality experience and should i combine it with a sports cat? and maybe the manifold changed by hillpower or something???

chipping car? am i betting chipping the car after the above is done as a once off or getting a piggy back if i am wanting cams etc??

cams? which are the best ones for quality and performance and how mush does it cost to get these changed?

suspension - which are the best springs and how low should i go on 16 or 15 inch wheels (not decided yet what i am having) would 40mm be ok without any major damage caused to the car? should i get rear and front strut braces as well???

brakes and clutch - is standard system capable of handling the power produced from above or would these need to be changed as well??? if brakes are changed which is a good priced quality set up??????

anything else that i have missed

many thanks to all who can help cheers i know alot of these subjects have been covered before !!!

Taking the engine first, if you're doing this in stages the IK and exhaust are your cheaper options and they won't require any ECU work. Viper or similar IK kits are all much of a muchness. For exhausts Prospeed in Cardiff are highly recommended.

For more serious engine work, a set of cams, manifold match and new/reflashed ECU package will be pushing you towards 200bhp. Yozzasport, GDI and Hill Power will all povide quality work. Schrick or AWT cams come highly recommended.

You could go for throttle bodies, and again Yozzasport/GDI/K-Tec are you men.

On the handling side, a reasonable priced option is a set of fixed FK dampers and springs. If you have more cash then look at HRs and Ledas.

The standard RS brakes are very good, but a Brembo/greenstuff/brakeline/oil set will add extra stopping power. Rentech/Yozzasport/K-tec offer these sorts of packages.

Do some searchres on these names and you'll find plenty of info about them.

cheers mate thanks for that information i shall do some further investigating on this anyone else got any opinions at all would like to hear from everyone if possible....ik are the one i am looking at the mo it seem the more expensive kits do no more than the cheaper kits like k&n and green etc...if i were choose one for bhp not for sound which is the better viper? bmc or the itg one i had the viper on my 172 cup and it did not make any real difference to be honest but it may have not been the correct one for the car i am sure it wasnt set up right again any views would be great!!!

Forget any thoughts of additional BHP with an IK. This site seems pretty unanimous that they don't offer any BHP. You might notice a little extra throttle response as your engine can breathe a little easier. The IK becomes more useful as you do more radical mods, where your engine requires more air.
Def get one with some form of cold air feed, like a Viper. IKs inhaling warm engine air will cause a drop in performance. The court is out on whether to have it completely closed or to have the feed open and pointing directly across the mouth of the filter. Closed deadens the sound of the IK. I've recently 'opened' mine up and it sounds better and there have been no noticeable drops in performance.

The best cheap mod that actually makes a difference is to have your inlet manifold matched. This costs around £150-£250. Yozzasport/GDI/AWT/Hill Power/K-Tec can all arrange this. Ben at AWT has an excellent reputation, but the others will all do a very good job

  ITB'd GDI Original?
Viper, manifold matched, stainless exhaust and sports CAT, SMT6 or similar piggyback ecu should see 15bhp+ maybe? Cost around £1500?

Probably more like 10bhp though.

^ sounds about rite...Tho i've seen gains of 10+ just from inlets alone...

Inlet matching does seem the best VFM compered to bhp gains. Shame i haven't got a manifold anymore to find out.

Does the ECU need remapping if the Inlet work has been done? or will it adjust enough to cope?

Hmm may have to wiat a while for that then!!

Still got my project car to finish before starting on this one

cheers guys right i have sorted the manifold and also the chip that needs to be done anyone got any more ideas i am thinking about a viper black mamber kit with a janspeed system and janspeed sport cat any good anyone???? cheers

cheers guys thanks for that i was worried about a normal decat because of the engine light coming on!!! is there anyway around this at all? or will it come in with a sports cat as well??? has anyone fitted a janspped system are they better of the same as magnex? anyone got any pics fitted to the car??? many thanks again.......oh forgot which springs should i go for when i lower the car???????? and will i get any problems from lowering and should i get strut supports for front and back????

Chances are the light could come on with a sports cat. Get yourself coilovers or you'll never be happy :D

Coilovers and brakes first.
Decat is no trouble just make sure you don't connect the second sensor the 182's have trouble that this throws a warning light on the 172 the ECU works differently so no error is ever noticed so long as the sensors never plugged in.

cheers guys that is intersting about the decat i thought it bought the light on straight away !!! how much are coilovers anyway? cheers guys andy gdi could you get back to me on the pm i sent you cheers guys thanks again
