172, WRX & civic type S on a track

What do ya reckon? Might be heading off to a track with 3 work mates. There'll be a brand new civic type s, brand new WRX and a 6 year old WRX against me little 172.

Am I gonna get killed by the scoobys or should I be ok as long as the straight isn't too long?

Will be the first track day for the lot of us so skills aren't exactly gonna be outstanding

Old standard WRXs are well slow tbh. The new WRX should be pretty damn good.

The type S shouldn't be much of a problem I would have thought.

the civic shouldnt give you any problems, but id imagine the scoobys will show you up slightly if the guys can drive well.

Civic Type S?? Isn't that the Type R look a like? I can't see that being a problem...
Should be pretty even against the scoobys, but depends on the track, the conditions, and the driver.... Enjoy anyway!

Is the older WRX an import? if it is it will be fast! If its a UK car it will be closer.

The older WRX is a UK car as far as I know. It seems to shift but won't go more than 3 months without blowing up! The civic type s is the model under the type R, It's a 1.6 but light, the handling's good and it revs like a kawasaki. Pretty quick but not worrying too much about that one. I'll just have to book us in sharpish - the new WRX owner is upgrading from a 1.4 mg zr so if I get us in quick there's a good chance he'll spin the new one

I think you`ll be surprised at how close you`ll be to the scoobys m8..but it does depend on the track tbh

The civic type s should be no problem , its a 2.0 not a 1.6 but its a detuned version of the type r . Should be a close thing between you and the scoobies , you might even struggle a little , especially on the bends , depends on driver skill also .

UK scoobys where only called WRX when the blob-eye model came in, before that it was only Jap imports called WRX, about 240bhp upwards depending on MY.

The last track day i did, the scoobys and porsche 2.7 boxters were getting pissed right off with me being glued to their back bumper, and pushing them out of the way on the corners!

It is a 1.6, it's brand new but not the shape that just came out. He's had it about 4 weeks. The new ones look like they're a 2 litre and a bit quicker. He wanted one quick because the new shape looks a bit funny. It doesn't feel like it'd quite keep up with the clio. Sot sure about the older scooby then, I'll sneak it into conversation at work and see if it's an import

Anyone recommend a good track around the midlands? I better go and check the track days bit to see if there's anything organised...............

You'll have loads of fun and will be envy of the day.

Just keep the revs in the power band because boy do those scoobies have some turbo lag.

All depends on the day and weather really, cos if it is a little damp then it won't take much for the scoopies to show you their heels

Mighty jealous and have fun getting it organised.

PS, always a good trick is to shed a few LB's, sounds silly but every LB saved with add serious value on the track. ie spare tyre out, shelf, rear head rests and even seats. It all helps with the power to weight

civic should'nt be a problem, and if you take out excessive weight, like said above, you may be suprising the scooby's...

The scooby will be quick even with a bit of turbo lag. lol

But like what was said you will catch them in the slower corners and the straights they will be quick.

As to the civic it's a 1.6 sport the only link to a type R is the skirts and bumpers, it's the granny version.

I owned an old 94 plate WRX and it was very, very quick and is much lighter than the newage 2000 on variants. If your coming up against Type R versions you'll stuggle....we're talking lightened versions of the already quick STI Import with DCCD and close ratio box.

People are right about the lag though, especially in imports running TD05 or VF turbos...there is absolutely loads of it...It was very refreshing to drive my 172 with an NA engine after all that

Just To Note...the Civic S Port Is Available In A 1.616v And A 2.0 De Tunned Typre R Engine. Only The New Ones Come In A 2.0 Version, The 1.6 Is Still Avaliable Too!

M reg WRX (1995) stepped up to the z4 ecu which ran 260ps.....knock about 10/20bhp off though as this figure is based on jap fuel which is 100ron.....it'll produce less power even on Optimax.

STIs were always more powerful...went from 250bhp on first model up to 280 on later editions

The early WRX's had 240PS, the later ones had 280PS and the STi's even more.

Most clued up owners have the car remapped to take account of the lower grade UK fuel which has little effect on the stated output as the mapper can up the boost to comensate for the increased knock correction.

Sounds as though this car hasn't been mapped though if it keeps blowing up

Regretably they only do the Type S as a 5 door, otherwise it's be a good halfway house. The Sport (1.6) is a Type R lookalike, but no match for actual performance. I used to have (couldn't afford high insurance groups back then) and it was a nice car, but not the kind of thing you'd take on a track day. Think of it along the lines of a 1.6 Focus, with a bodykit....

I know. I had an Impreza WRX STi Version V Type R It had the phase two engine and was remapped for Optimax using the ECUTEK tool.

I do think my current 172 has better steering/feedback than my WRX ever had which does make it very enjoyable to drive.
