172ph1 throttle cable - make your own?

Car  Lots of Alfas
My throttle cable has just frayed badly and about to snap 2 days before its MOT . Luckily I managed to make it home with it just holding together on 1 thread, it wont idle now due to it catching badly. I see Renault will sell you the whole assembled cable with tube and ends and bits but this looks tricky to thread through with it all assembled.. However I have some good quality cable, If I were to find the correct ends that slot into the pedal and throttle could I just cut a new cable to the same length as the old cable and feed this through the exisiting tube? Has anyone else done this?
