182 brake failure

was driving the on saturday and had drove about 2 miles and a woman pulled out in front of me , i hit the brakes and nothing happened the pedal was brick hard like there was no servo, i had to mount the kerb to miss her which fooked an alloy , the garages were all shut due to the time of year and the aa were no help either, the car has been sitting in the drive since saturday and went to take it too the dealers today and the brakes did the same again , called the dealers who said i cant take the car in till friday , have any of you guys came across this ??? , thanks brian .

Yet another brake problem.... wierd !!!

Well mate, lots of us have been having brake probs recently and mine are also rubbish. My pedel isnt hard until near the bottom but really dont work even if i stand in it.

Would get renault to check the lines and possible the servo (although this hasnt change alot of pps probs), maybe flush it through with some new fluid.

And if it is a warranty issue, i would fight to get them pay for the alloy.

thanks justin m8 , it is still under warranty , wasn't sure where i stood with the alloy though but thanks again m8

I have a problemn with my brakes a while ago. I took it back to Renault and they discovered a faulty caliper and replaced it. My brakes are no way as good as they were when I got the car though.

Any good replacement products available?

might not have bled them properly..

Definatly bleed the brakes ds2500's are a popular upgrade chocie but stock pads arn't bad for what they are and the price (£40 or so) vs £85 or so from DS2500's

I'm getting my brakes checked on wednesday but am also getting some ds2500 and decent dot 4 fluid.

So dot 4 fluid, properly bled through and some Ferodo DS2500 should do the trick if your brakes are fine otherwise.

my brakes were getting very poor, almost lethal.

fitted ds2500's and not much better.

my cars at renault now having some silkolene pro race 2000 fluid bled into the system (f**king expensive but takes heat up to 300degrees C)

report to come tomorrow.

Had my 182 since Sept 04, My brakes are crap!!
Never found any fault on them though, if i really stand on them they just slow me down, even over shot a few junctions before now!
when i had them checked there was only 10% ware on them (done 20,000miles)
i thought it was just me expecting to much from them till i saw this post.

also, had my suspension changed twice now by Renault and it has gone again so if anyone can recomend what to get rather than Renault changing it yet again for it just to fail again?

Get it changed again mybe your just unlucky I had two sets of bad coilover shocks once it was just pure chance. Whats wrong with the suspension though?
Leda do a coilover kit for list price of £1.3k but GaryG got a discount on a bulk buy some time agao so can get it for under £1k now I think. Otherwise there the Yozzasport/Blistein ones for £1.3k or the Gaz onces which were the first onces made and I don't think they got many more orders as they were quite a hard setup more than some people were willing to accept. You can pick them up second hand for under £400 though new were £500 or so.

The other option is to either get 172 hubs and fit 172 coilovers as there a bigger choice (H and R are superb at £500 or so) or buy some 172 coilovers and have the bolts drilled another 4mm longer as the 182 Cup suspension packed cars have slightly different bolt hole spacing. The none Cup suspension packed cars ie with light grey wheels use 172 hubs so no need to adjust the 172 coilovers as they just fit.

The shock's keep draining (usualy end up with wheels caked in oil) and i keep snaping springs, i could understand if i was going up and down bumpy lanes but 99% of my driving is on the motorway! (usualy on the rev limiter in 5th gear)

i did have a thought of my own (re the brakes) and maybe the oil from the shockers has gone onto the disks??
i have cleaned them just i case but they are just the same.

yep oil on the disk could be the killer I'd go get the shocks chnaged again you might have just had two bad ones.

got mine back today..

brakes seem just as s**t

well gutted

spent 90 quid on ds2500s and s**t loads on silkolene fluid and theyre CRAP

dunno whether its because its so cold out?

i can put my foot to the floor on damp roads at 30/60 and the ABS wont even kick in..

Please dont say that lol. Ive got some new ds2500 and dot 4 but am getting renault to cheak the breaks before put them in.

You got any idea what else it could be? Mine have always been this sh*te.

i've been running 2500 pads, with standard new discs since the summer and they are superb, really nice bite, and work well from cold, think the problem must lie else where

f**k.. thing is now renault are gonna blame the brakes being s**t on me using 'non standard fluid'

ive noticed my drivers side wheel doesnt get much brake dust on it? but it doesnt pull to the side or anythingunder braking.

seems to be just a 182 issue. Isn't the ESP the difference between 172 and 182?

  BMW M3
Actually, I was thinking the other day that my alloys havent got all dusted up with brake dust as they normally do... but yet i am driving the same. Why would this be, if the pads were low surely i would feel it, no?

Yeah same here, but my abs works fine up hill at 15mph, always kicks in when i try and stop at the top of my street but above that speed even in the wet there isnt enuf in them to for the abs to react.
i just use my gears to help slow me down now, had a few junctions where ive not managed to stop at all and ended up going straight accross or straight out of them! now that gets the heart beating a little quicker!

I did that not too long ago. Was in the country side, in the middle of nowhere, looking for this house. Suddenly this junction appeared with an almost hidden stop sign. Tried the brakes, but with there current condition i knew i would have no chance. Shot straight through and absolutly sha* it. lol

Almost became religious!! lol

its a weird feeling, just knowing your foot is pressed as hard down as it will go and yet the feel back from the car is as if you just put the handbrake on by 1 click, you no, enuf to feel the brakes are on but there's no god dam way your gunna stop!

Know exactly what you mean lol... Really got to get them fixed. Was approaching a roundabout ona dual at 75 mph tried the brake miles back and they were seriously poor. I pretty much just stood on them for 5 sec, let go 2secs then again and agin until finally stopped 1 meter past the line. Guy next to me looked at me as if i was planning on going through the red lol

Loved the brakes on my Laguna 2, they were sh*t hot, you put your foot within an inch of the pedel and your face was pinned up against the windscreen lol

but yes your right, one day we (and many other's out there) need to get them sorted out, its pointless havin all that engine power with nothing to stop you! (especially with all them Subaru's keep gettin in the way)

Lol... Drive a MK4 golf GTTDI alot and those brake are brilliant !!! Similar sized disks, standard pad and a heavier car ??? WTF ? Wish mine were as good.

Getting renault to look on wed and them some new ds2500's so hopfully might solve it.

Let me know the outcome, could be servo? everythin else seems ok on mine so i guess the servo is the only thing left to blame.

  BMW M3
Dont really know mate. My ESP works fine as ive tested it a few times recently and the prob just seems that the brakes are not sharp at all. Just going to wait and see what renault say...

Will do.... Hopefully its not the servo. Heard a couple of peeps say they got these changed and didnt make any difference. Then they got 2500's + dot 4 and all was fine. Suppose every case can be different. will let you know what happens.

update on the brakes for you guys , car has been with renault since wednesday and spoke to them today , they seem to think that the servo hose has a valve in it which they think is the problem ,( dont like when they say they think ), this part is being fitted tomorrow and they will test the car again , it's interesting the amount of 182 ownwers who are experiencing brake fade , i mines has been doing this for a while and i thought it was just my driving .i.e. not pressing the pedal hard enough , but i'm starting to think thats not the case now , i thought the brakes were brill on the 182 when i first got the car , but starting to have reservations about them now , thanks again guys . brian

'' i thought the brakes were brill on the 182 when i first got the car , but starting to have reservations about them now , thanks again guys . brian''

exactly how i was

got the car, tappe dthe brakes and was nearly through the screen, much like my bros megane and my sisters clio - awesome renault brakes.

now mine are worse than 1.1 106 brakes and they are shockingly poor.

update on brakes. got the car back from the stealers today and thay have changed the non return valve on the servo hose , time will tell if thats repaired the fault , the service manager tried to say that it was driver error and he felt there was nothing wrong with the brakes , driver error once maybe but three times in the space of 4 days i think not ,i told him yeah i like to overshoot junctions and mount kerbs just for some fun .mind you this was the same guy who told me renault told them to fit my cd changer in the boot so as it wouldn't upset the balance of the car ,lol, thanks for all the input and help though guys appreciated , brian

  R35 GTR
my brakes are awesome, hardly ever have to stand on them to stop, but have to brace myself on steering wheel most of the time.
:D

at least there is one good thing about the car.

I hate people like that, they'll tell you the earth's gravity is wierd in January, and its not actually the brakes fault at all. Tossers.

Anyway, to be a bit more constructive...I had this problem too. Interestingly the braking was always much worse when the brakes were cold, so after 30 mins of using them (which is a lot!) they improved, and ABS would start to kick in again. Have any of you found this?

Initially I changed my fluid, and found no change.

Then I took it to Renault and had the servo replaced, again no change.

Finally I ordered a full set of DS2500's, and the brakes are so much better. But before I get all excited about them, there is still something that doesn't feel right. The brakes bite ok, but its a little too progressive at times. I'm not sure if the DS2500's have just masked the problem.

i have found this yes, sometiems they will be dangerously crap and others they will be ''ok''

was this under warranty?

my ds2500's made the brakes better at first but now they're crap again. exactly like the standard pads were.. amazing when i got it then went crap...

172 MKII has had esp since 2002 m8. the breaks on my old 172MKII were awesome really crisp bite and pulled up hard, althouth the pads wore a bit faster than i would have liked i cant fault them, it even seemed to breakl harder than my cup but then again that hasnt had any new pads since new and is a few years old now.
think the 182`s have dodgy or squidgy breaks for some reason ??

i thought that too , till the last couple of months ,i find the brakes are worse if i'm coming to the end of the slip rd , i travel this road most days and i have the same brake point , sometimes it stops other times it's a scary moment , doesn't matter if the roads wet or dry , the wheels dont lock up but the car just doeasn't want to stop , renault say they checked all the pads and they say all are fine, my old 172 had brill brakes even when the pads were really low but i cant say i have the same confidence with the 182 as i did when the car was new
