182 - Gear lever too far forward

  Renault Clio 182 Trophy
Compared with the other cars that I drive, the gear lever is about 2" further forward. This is fine for road use, but I have visions of missing the gear lever when competing. Other than an extension has anyone come across a neat solution which does not affect the working of the reverse gear guard. I did wonder about shortening the connecting shaft from the gear lever to the gearbox, but that could aggravate the reverse gear query.

its true this, i drive lots of vans/cars for work, and i think the gear lever is further away than normal

its not too far forward (ok a little) the real issue is 1st third and 5th there a stretch, now il admit it i have short`ish legs and long monkey arms in 5.8" with me booits on so im quite close to steering coloumn not massivley, but if i was taller leg wise it would imagine unless i had really long arms, a bit like this ..

i would strugle to push 1,3,5 in gear. so it could be closer but then again if the throw was shorter it would solve the problem

why not try a short shifter like BBPT`s

Re put the seat forward; Knees hit the steering column!! Not nice!

Surely if your legs touch the steering coloum with the seat forward a bit you must be quite tall and thus have longer arms. does that sound right.....:S

Buy a CTR

And join 30 million other bread delivery van drivers.............yawn lol

Short shift will make it even worse because then your gonna have to reach lower down for it.

I cant straighten my left arm no where near straight due to a childhood accident but ive never once found the Clio to be a problem............you wanna try a Honda Civic saloon. A mates got one and i cant even touch it its that far forward !!!

Buy a Vee ... the gear stick is less of a stretch :approve:

Maybe in a mk2....my mk1 had the longest throw of any gearstick, ever! Had to rest in between changes it took so long.

I'm 6ft so I have my chair pretty far back, and the shifter is quite a long way forward compared to nearly every other car I drive. I cant move the chair forward without hacksawing 3 inches out of shins first. On reflection, that probably isnt a good idea so I'll just put up with it as I'm used to it, but it *is* a long way forward.

I have this problem but its not to bad you just learn to live with it. I've yet to make a mistake which changing up due to it.
