Why didnt they use a 6speed box? Is it a space thing?

Probably space and weight. The characteristics of the engine suit a 5 speed box though, you dont have to change gear every five seconds.

Yeah, but it would have been nice to keep the 5 gears as they are, and then have a longer 6th gear for low rev low acceleration motorway cruising.

agree, 5th is a bit poop for long motorway cruises could do with a 6th longer cog and probably space the other ratios closer together as a result

Its a squeeze to even fit the 2 litre lump under that bonnet let alone a 6 speed box (i fitted new bulbs to a 172 the other day and there was space for my little finger in that engine bay and prescious little else!), they only just managed to fit both in the 306 gti-6 and thats a bigger car. Still though with the 306 the turning circle is as good as an oil tankers! 6 speeds would be good, especially in keeping the car right in its powerband, but IMO it would be too impractical to do.

Its cheaper for Renault just to redesign the ratios than stick the 6 speed boxes in.

Also it means that where th new Clio comes out with a 6 speed people are more likly to upgrade.

a 6 speed box will fit - easy. But the 182 doesnt need a 6th gear - neither does the Clio V6 really. My V6 was faster in 5TH gear at top end than in 6TH - its just an economy / cruising gear. The engine simply doesnt need 6 gears.

when we talk lack of space all we need to do is look at the position of the fecking dipstick!

I feel Id benefit from a 6th gear personally - particularly on motorway, cruising at 3000rpm in 5th has an annoying engine note as the car wants to go faster, 6th gear would be nice.
