182 : MPG drop

  Clio 197
My MPG has taken a dive...

Consistently (with tyres inflated according to Renaults recommendations), I've been getting 33.7 MPG (calculated from fuel receipts) on motorway journeys (speed 78MPH or below).

When I first got the car, the same motorway driving used to get me an extra 4-5MPG (so closer to 40).

So, now I pay £41 to fill-up, and I get just under 340 miles out of it (fuel light on for the last 40miles).

Could this be anything to do with the famous temperature sensor problem I've had in the past (which is now actually reading correctly). Ie: Could the wiring/signal still be faulty despite the dashboard gauge reading correctly?

Tracking is spot-on. Car unloaded.

Can't think of any other reason.

Oms!

Weird that you mension this Oms, I used to get about 35 - 36 mpg driving backwards and forwards to work, since I had the car serviced (36k) the mileage has dropped to around 33 - 34 althought sometimes as low as 30 driving the same journeys, same speed, etc... only a slight drop, but weird that it decreased after the service.

My 172 costs about £39 to fill up, and i can do around 350 miles on that (mpg dropping to 28 at one point lol)

I think it might be the weather that is causing this. I only get 33-35mpg now when driving within speed limits and not ragging it. A few months back I was get 37-39mpg, it might have something to do with perhaps using the lights, heater more?

I did see 45mpg on the dual carriage way the other night though - very strange!

god i wish i saw the 30 mpg mark, it seems to be stuck on 25.7 all the time, it does get hammerd though

I have always used optimax but recently changed to Total 98ron (as there are no Shell garages for miles) and my fuel economy was 28-29mpg (not motorway miles for me). I assumed this was due to my new engine but I thought I`d try and go back to Opti...my mpg has gone up to 31-32 pretty much straight away..I wasn`t sure b4 but I`ll be using it from now on (91p for the optimax and 97p for total)

Yes the colder weather will affect your mpg. As it takes that little bit longer for the engine to get to operating temperture (and it is in this time that a car is something silly like 70% less efficient). Also, having heaters, lights, on more constantly as mentioned will also bring mpg down (only very slightly-but it all adds up unfortunately).

A few pointers:

Make sure the tyre pressures are as recommended in the car’s handbook. Wind resistance and drag mean that if they are 4-6psi below the correct pressure, fuel use suffers by 2-3%. Low tyre pressures compromise safety, too.

The AA claims 20% of motorway drivers travel at more than 80mph. Cut that to 70mph and you save around 40p every 10 miles.

Seems that most of them take a drop once they are worn in properly +10/15k. Maybe get a service and see if that make a difference.

If u can't get 35mpg when ur driving down the motorway at 80/90 then theres something wrong with ur driving or something wrong with the car

Mine has been tuned to 201 BHP by GDI though.... And I've only done town driving since and its at a steady 19.5MPG at the mo. I did used to get between 30 - 35 on the motorway but I have not done a motorway stint yet with the mods. Very rarely do motorway driving anyway, about once or twice a month.

Mines a about 21-22mpg due to only driving 3-3.5 miles in traffic to work and back. :( Needs to have a good run....

Lol been averaging around 42mpg :)

But that is 60miles a day in 5th not going above 3k revs :p

Nothing like getting 400+ miles from a tank in a 172. But I have times where I fill up and a tank lasts 280 miles :?

I was at Brands to (the day it pissed down) and was getting 24 MPG but that was before the mods.

That was a fantastic track day... Looking forward to the next one at Brands!
My mpg ended up at 18.8 after that session!!

What fuel have you been running the car on that can make a difference.
The wetaher will affect it though.
200 miles to a tank though? I start to get worried when I've only 200 miles left in a tank.

I've got a drop in mine (standard 172) since it had a bit of work done for MOT :S
Gearbox stripped & new seals in
New O/S driveshaft

Around town I would of been getting 30-33mpg
last night my average was 19.8

Any ideas?

2.5 year bump, get in !!

My dad has it too on his 52 172, after it came back from renault from having the cambelt done the mpg as totally dropped down. He could get 45 mpg from it, now he's lucky to get 35 mpg:S same driving style & conditions etc.

He took it back to them & they claimed to have done a few checks on it, he told the dude that some could get over 40 mpg (info I found out on here & printed off hfor him)
The dude claimed that he's never heard of that bafore and it was quite impossible to do. They gave him the car back with an average of 46 mpg showing on it :S in order to get the high mpg figure, they had all the fans off & no air con on either, they also didn't do any speed in it.

I was really confused, until I looked at the bloody date!!!

91p for unleaded?!!! I wondered where the fook he lived!

Bit of a look back into the past!
