182 Online Insurance

I was discussing with some people yesterday about declaring the Cup Packs on their insurance.

After ringing round some insurance companies I found out that you do have to declare them some will charge you some wont and some will basically say f@*k you off. I even stressed (over stressed more like it) that these are factory fitted optional extras.

Any way what I want to know is: What would happen if you got a quote online? Alot of the insurance companies online don't even ask if the car has been modified in any way. Tesco for example when you ring them wont give you a quote over the phone without a registration number so I was told to go online so I did and got a decent quote.

My other question: When I do give them the registration number will the Cup packs appear under the cars details or what???

Most insurance companies only increase premiums on performance mods,
uprated suspension is rarely considered a performance mod.

With Tesco I shouldn't worry, check the MINI, for that car they have various factory versions actually listed.
e.g. Cooper, Cooper Chilli, Cooper Works (althought the Works kit is actually fitted by your dealer)

Esure however doesn't they just like the main variants e.g. One, Cooper and S.

One insurance broker once told me if your car comes with alloys and you put other ones on,
If you declare them and they were stolen you could claim for them,
but if you don't they just pay out for the standard ones.

Give Renault Insurance a call as if anyone should know (hopefully) they will.

Once you've purchased (your best quote) please submit the details to the site.
The more owners who submit their best quotes the better the database becomes.
It's not going to stop you ringing round but it'll give you the best list of companies to start with.

Forgot to mention all the insurance companies that are owned or underwriten (what ever they call it) by directline are the ones that will not insure you if your under 25!!

Hi andy,

I replied to your other thread, as I'm (currently) with Direct Line -

I did my original "quote" online, then phoned them up afterwards to do the deal (as I wanted to check the situation with the Cup Packs). It seems to be depending on who you speak to at the Insurers, as to what answer you get?

I guess it's not so much thath you are driving a 'modified' car, more so that they have the exact specification, in case of a full-loss write off/replacement?

Who knows! I am not an Insurance expert by any means - anyone on here either know what the deal is? Or, anyone who works for an insurer care to comment?

Most?
I doubt it mate, at least not in any experience I've had with insurance companies. I've argued along similar lines that suspension upgrades aren't necessarily 'performance mods' (in a ploy to get cheaper quotes), but insurers in the know argue otherwise stating that they enable you to 'corner quicker' etc so you can't always get away with it.

My car was written off some time ago, I had not declared my cup packs. As part of the claim I sent my original reciept which demonstrated Cup suspension pack and metallic paint. Not only did I still get a payout, I got an increased payout because these options make the car worth more. That was with egg, who are backed by UK insurance (who also underwrite most companies).

Just to scare you all when I rang Renault Insurance for a quote they stated the Cup packs were mods and wanted £180 more all in. How wack is that, the guy on the phone couldn't believe what his computer was saying as he agreed if Renault fit it on the production line its not a racing mod.

If anything wouldn't stiffer springs etc be more likely to keep the car on the road?

its bloody stupid. Its all based on stats on a computer and not what it is in real life. Dont declare cup packs, the operators wont have a clue what you are on about. As far as I'm concerned I have a standard 182 like it was when it left the factory. Which I do

Like to see some of you having a good discussuion about this. It deffinately gets people all fired up. I've got a decent quote off EGG so thanks 'Edgerfs' I nearly forgot about them guys. I'm not gonna declare them.

So F@*K Privilege. You must obviously got to be posh to be privileged (sorry had to drop that in some where!LOL!).

I'll admit I'm with Liam182 on this - as far as I'm concerned, my 182 was supplied to me as factory-spec, but my Renault dealer.

If an insurer would like to argue that case, then I'd be happy to do so - most of them wouldn't know a Cup Pack from an Egg Cup anyway!
