182 or Astra GSI Turbo

  ff 182
GSi any day. I've owned both 1*2 and GSi, GSi was epic fun when remapped!!
1*2 is good in the twisties but lacks torque big time.
Here's my old one.

bloody good car, i think they are the best shape astra ever, new ones look like mazda's! i loved every minute of mine. i had 260bhp and 300 odd torque, i would have another anyday. bottom line is they are fast whatever, good old vaux turbo. keep your seat's, vw turbo's and focus st's. mine would stick with a mates 330bhp focus just which i believe is bloody good, think the torque plays a big part. in the wet yes clio would beat off the mark easy (try pull away in wet with 260 + horse power!) in the dry i reckon better depending on start, the astra can get away when it wants. (too many sensors) but after 60 they pull just as hard all the way to 140-150.
i have a clio because i like them too, i wanted to have one so i have. both good in thier own way. got to have respect for both cars really. who really puts there car to the limits when cornering on british roads? dont matter what you have a bump in the road or a pothole will throw any car out of control! :)

nah. terrible gearbox , very sticky.

my astra is better than my clio for the gears, everytime i shift quickly i get a crunch!

yours must of been bad?

mine was the silver one.it had a great sounding 3inch from turbo back exhaust :) i miss that sound, the odd pop or bang as it spools up and you shift the gears quick. gargle sound from cold when its warming up. i still text the lad who bought it, he loves it, (buy back, buy back!!) :D

So dull that you'll want to crash it into another one.

I love your opinions on cars Chris, so brutally honest :approve:

I agree with Chris, It does fast in a straight line well but not much else. Bland interior thats pretty much the same from envoy to GSI spec bar the seats, build quality can be just as ropey as Renaults, not great mpg when mapped but not outstanding performance when not.

Rather have a LCR or an early S3.

lcr's aint all that either mate, cheap build. plastics wear out. looks ok but with 300bhp they are no quicker than an astra with 230-240bhp. my mate has s3 and its no where as aggressive as my astra was, too smooth and feels like an n/a engine, same with the lcr's. turbo surge is such a nice feeling. audi build is really good, cant take that away from you.

for the record the astra gsi is german built, with a lotus designed engine. also the handling was tweaked using the nuringburg circuit (spell?)

some videos for those who think they are dull and boring, i strongly disagree.

  R26
My mate at College has a Silver GSI on Collies with Recaros and a VXR engine in it, running about 290bhp and 320ft/lb.

Its a f**king beast.... and even thought its quite a chavvy looking i think id have it over my Clio just for the power difference :(

  late 2003 172cup
Why people saying they are chavy? Its an older mans car? Whats chavy about them? Clio's and saxo's are chav'd most of the time by 17 year old's fitting lexus lights or fusion stickers! Max power is or was chav. Bodykits and chrome spinner's. Too be honest any car can be chav'd. Its the person not the car.

  BMW E92/Audi S3
I've always associated Astra's with chav's, mainly as I see chav's driving them?

and I see chavs in 106GTis but theyre still bloody good cars..
I'd pick my old Astra GSi over a 'little Clio' any day. The Clio is a laughing stock compared to serious boost.
I've seen a few chavs in Astra's but I don't think I've seen any in a GSi. Young men with pretty ladies or an older man using it as a cheap fun run around..

Exactly. All the little girls are too worried about what other people think. If you get out of a GSi thats blacked out and blurring out bassline then yeah, Utter chav. I mean fair enough if you hate the way it looks. Thats a whole different scenario.

It's the CAR..

  late 2003 172cup
What is a chav mate? And you dont see them in other cars? And they ride round in astra gsi's? Or could the be riding round in sxi's or ls models maybe?

  Homo spec mazda
My mates got one running somewhere between 260 and 270 brake. Its on eibach springs with an adjustable rear ARB, and it really doesnt handle all that badly, its silly quick in a straight line too.

His beats another mates 310bhp focus ST.

Oh I didn't say they were bad!
Just answering the question as to why they are perceived as chavvy.
I would have one over a sport!
But I have a bigger car in mind again. ;)

Reyes my post came after yours, i was asking others mate.

being an owner of one for a while, its hard to hear one being put down? mostly by peeps under 20 who have not experienced many motors?
i am only 30 years old but i have experienced alot of cars, from xr2's,xr3i, xr4x4, cossies, rs turbo's 1/2, astra gte's/gsi's/sxi/lxi/sri/, r5 turbo's, 106gti, 205, caverlier gsi/ sri130/lxi/turbo to late cars LCR/ST's /vxr's corsa and astra/ scooby's/evo's/CTR/audi's.....................the list goes on! i have respect for most of them but i hate CTR's.............dont know why. i just hate them. (dont mean they are crap tho! i tend to think more over rated speed wise :))

Coming from someone who has owned both, id like to offer an unbiased opinion :)

This was my Flame Red 2002 Gsi, lowered, remapped, incution pipe/SMIC: 238bhp and 280l/b's torque. Standard bodywork with facelift badges and clear rear lights:

Im sure some chavs own them, but you could say the same about Clios. So thats a bit of a throw away comment.

I pestered a mate of a mate to buy this car for months as it was immaculate had loads of choice mods done already. I took delivery in June, it was sold 8months later. It never broke, was good on the motorway, was very fast and reasnably comfy (Hurt my back on long journeys though) Great boot space, swallows 4 adults with ease, has all the toys and IMO look great!

BUT

and its a big but...

ITS THE MOST BORING CAR ON EARTH TO DRIVE.

Electric steering, electric throttle and what feels like electric brakes. Its like playing gran turismo but even more tedious. It just lacks any kind of driver involvement. If you had a Clio which IMO is one of the best FWD hatches ive ever driven, then you will be bored to tears. No matter how fast it goes in a straight line. Also, it drank almost as much juice as my 3.2l M3, is impossible to park as you cant see the bonnet, or out the boot the spoiler blocks traffic from the rear (Including unmarked cop cars :( ) and the sides are very high.

I would really urge people to buy something else. If you got one cheap enough then its a decent modern car thats built well and quick. But its as exciting as celelbrity big brother :(

  late 2003 172cup
you serious? i remember your car, did you ever join the astra owners club? nice astra by the way , i nearly bought a red one as they are so rare. i suppose this above is your opinion. there not that bad tho are they mate. :)

  BMW E92/Audi S3
My opinion is unbiased too. Everyone has different views. There was mine. I owned both the Clio 172 and Astra GSi for 2 months. The GSi handled like a bag of s**t but had bags more torque (Because of the turbo)
My conclusion is, if the Astra had no boost. It would be s**t.

  M3 SMG
Yeah i was on AOC :) Oh and thanks, it did look gorgeous and was immaculate!

I do beleive they are as bad as i have written, it never let me down and certainly carried me around in comfort... But if you drive something as much fun as a 182 and get in one of those Astras you will be asleep by the second corner

  200 FF Storm Grey
They are nice looking cars but they're an old car imo, old mechanics, old interior, old old old

  late 2003 172cup
I think if I drove a car everyday like it was stolen it would be the cup. But I am missing the less effort pull. Long journeys in the clio are not nice. I miss The comfort. The sounds with the popping and banging. The astra sounded more manly for me. 90% of my driving is grown up, but for the other 10 maybe the clio. But then again I loved my fun in the astra. Keeping up with the big cars. Clio has not let me down yet. But I feel its not long before it fails me. The astra pulled bigger leads in a play. I am not into going round corners as fast as possible. So for me I would have the boring astra again. Lol. But this has been an experience and its a good car all the same. :)

I sort of know what you mean, clio you need to put some effort into the driving, which is a good and bad thing, good as when you're in the mood you're grinning but on a damp evening drive home from work you just cannot be fooked.

Thanks mate. ;) I would have both. Before I bought my astra I was looking at a 2004 182 cup. I picked the astra as I have never owned a turbo car before. Glad I had one, now glad I have owned a clio too. Next car will be audi tho. Lol. Most likely smokey one with loads of torque ;)
