  182>FRS>VX220 now 350Z

Hey everyone, im going to be ordering a new car sometime next week and although i am strongly swaying towards the 182 what would people say are its closest rivals in terms of performance?

cheers :)

I thought about the type R and then came to the conclusion that i couldnt live with the looks! The clios not the nicest looking car in the world but i quite like it.

Anyone got an opinion on the pug gti 180? What about the seat cupra R... would have to be the ibiza, the leon is nice but i wish it didnt have 5 doors!

haha not bias by any chance. Im very nearly sold on the idea of a 182 (hence why im on here lol) Just want to make sure ive considered all the options before i commit to the clio.

Evo did a group test.

182 came out on top with the Cooper S 2nd and the Type R 3rd. The latter two are far more expensive though. The Pug 180 got absolutely slated.

The 182 was actually far quicker than the manufacturers figures, quicker to 60 than all the others and second fastest to 100 just half a second down on the Type R. Handling being the 182s best point although if they did a build quality test it would probably come last.

They are all a nightmare to buy brand new with lead times of 3 to 4 months for a factory order although Evo reckon its 6 months for the Cooper S.

Ignoring friends and family discounts, ex-demos, pre-regd or imports you are talking £13.5k with all the Cup options. In my frustration at the lead time I have looked for another car that offers 168bhp per tonne for the money and I have to admit nothing comes close.

I looked into the so called rivals and if any of them were better value for money and better performance id be driving one.

I wanted the best there is at this time for my money and its the 182 :D

Cheers for that Toypop! Ive got a budget of 16k so the clio would save me a few pennys! My bro had to wait a three of months for his S so not too bad.

  Arctic Blue 182

Good call Toypop. I was going to post exactly the same thing. Ive got that copy of Evo and the Pug was a complete waste of space tbh. Mmmm that artical did make pleasant reading.

Get the 182 Gary G.

Just to throw in a different perspective I was in the same position last month and ended up going for a new CTR (which Im very happy with). Considered a 182 but I wasnt that keen on its looks and I though the build quality of the CTR felt a lot better. It felt more stable at speed and had a much better gear change aswell.

It does cost a grand more (16k vs 15k for the clio (including cup pack). Youre more likely to get a discount on the Clio than on the CTR as theyre in pretty short supply at the moment so youll prob find most dealers wont budge on price. I think it should hold value better than the 182 tho.

I wouldnt go for a CTR if you want any toys or creature comforts tho otherwise youll find yourself paying closer to £19k for stuff like A/C and leather interior trim.

I only really seriously considered either the 182 or the CTR. Had a look at some of the other competition but wasnt interested because:-

Cooper S - The boots way too small as are the rear seats which are practically useless. Hated the Tacky interior aswell and the fact that everything is an optional extra (you dont even get a CD player for the basic price of £14.5k!)

Astra GSi - Felt more like a comfy cruiser than a hot hatch though it is quick. Likely to drop in value very quick aswell. Would make a good used buy in a couple of years tho.

Pug206-180 - Felt the built quality and cheap plastic let it down really badly. The driving position was awkward, the footpedals too small I (think theyve had problems adapting it to RHD tbh) and the gearchange is awful.

Part of me still wants a Type R as it is better looking, better built and has a nicer interior. But as you say the Clio can be purchased for a knocked down £13.5k and the basic low spec Type R is £15.5 at best.

Mind you I would have still got a Type R if the lead time wasnt as bad as the 182. Given that the wait is the same I might as well save money and get the quicker, higher spec car.

I think Renault and Honda must be losing a lot sales due to the supply problems - very poor planning.

The market is over supplied as far as the crappy 1.4/1.6 basic models go, you have dealers pre-registering left right and centre whilst car supermarkets are jammed to bursting with unwanted cars. Meanwhile people are queueing around the block for the sports models and many are turning away and buying something else. Clearly they need to redistribute their production resources.

I dont buy this argument that they are restricting supply to prevent the sports models from becoming too common either. These are crappy little superminis FFS, not Ferraris. There is more prestige in an ounce of dogs turd than in a 182 or Type R!!!

I suspect restricted supplies are more to do with the manufacturers trying to keep prices of new and second hand ones artificially high and stopping ppl from being able to haggle for discount on new ones rather than keeping them scarce to be honest.

tryin to point sommit out tom? lol

if your lookin for a NEW hot hatch which is sub 7 seconds and under 12k then there are NO rivals as far as i can see....

the trade centre are doing new 182s for £12150, compare that to the 19k quoted earlier for a CTR fully loaded!!! theyre not in the same league!!!

From left field - Toyota Celica vvti. You should be able to pick one up with a few extras for 16k.

I know 140 bhp is low in this company but this is a well built car, quick not fast and can cruise at 100mph in 6th all day. I had one for 3 years, nothing went wrong and I hated handing it back. Handling is on a par with 182.

Or go for manic vvtli with 189bhp, may be over your budget though.

I have a had a 182 for 2 weeks now, I look forward to every trip in it.

I found the CTR needed working hard around town, the engine really needs revs to get the performance. I just found it needed too much reving. The 182 is far better around town, lots more torque (around 80% @ 2500rpm, i think), for me it just makes it a more enjoyable overall drive. Although on the open road the handling of the 182 needs some getting use to but it is the most enjoyable drive once youve mastered it.

I personally love the looks of the 182, not too in your face, just enough that the people who really know cars know it is something a little special, while most will have a go and get blown away!

If you want build quality, bullet proof engines and good resale values the CTR would probably be best, but for a car that will put a smile on your face everytime you drive it, it has to be the 182! sod the future!

Cheers for your views guys! :D

Went down to the local Renault dealership and they didnt even have one in the showroom!! After a talk with the salesman (who new nothing btw!) i found that there was an artic blue one that was awaiting collection so i had a look round it.

First impressions generally good, didnt really look that special tho...was just the basic (no cup extras) car...would like to have seen a cupd one! The interior looked a bit, dare i say it.....poor  but im sure when i take one for a drive on wednesday it will redeem itself ;)

I was told that if i was to order one now it wouldnt arrive until end of sept/beginning of oct! Is there any way i can get one sooner from a dealer...non pre-reg tho. Im willing to drive anywhere to get one so do u think it would be worth me ringing around dealers seeing if they have anything in stock?? or am i being stupid!

Thanks guys

Thanks for the pic mate...ive trawled through the galleries but nothing beats seeing one in real life. Ive only seen two so far, a black one with cup options and the racing blue with the stripes driven by an old guy out of sainsburys lol. Cant wait to drive one on wednesday! :)

The CTR has loads of low down grunt...

If it was a newish (demonstrator) that you drove then it will still be tight and they take forwever to run in!

Mine is just starting to come good at 17k miles.

haha, well thats pretty much what my old man thinks! He cant understand why id want a crappy clio < his words not mine lol.

I personally cant stand the face-lifted CTRs looks! sorry, no offence intended to anyone thats got one :)

I cant decide between Artic Blue and Racing blue?!?
