182 vapour from exhaust at high revs!!

  Clio 172 Cup
Hi guys this has probably been posted loads but just wanted some advice pls. I got my 2004 Clio 182 back in October and I only really do a few miles each day to work and back. As the weather has changed I notice when I hit 5k the road in my rear view disappears in a cloud of mist!!! I took the car out this morn for a long blast but still is the same when the revs get high ? The car is totally standard. Thanks guys.

Normal, especially as you're only doing a few miles each day so the car doesn't get hot.

My old dear used to drive about 3 miles to work and back in the 182.. When the exhaust finally went I took it off and there was about 2 gallon of water sloshing around..

If I were you I'd take the car on the motorway and get it super hot and do a few blasts until no more mist appears. Get rid of the build up, it not just the cat working.

Has your 182 got the standard exhaust? As Dave said, they retain water if not hot and tend to rust quite badly. Somehow, some way, I managed to get to 60k mileage on mine before it finally needed replacing. They are expensive (for what they are), heavy, too quiet and not well built. An after-market option is ALWAYS the best option with the 182 exhaust.

Totally, I think it made around 50k+ before breaking free.. It explained the exhaust hangers lasting 4 minutes and friends saying they had to move when I booted it and they were following.. I know cat cars produced some water and put it down to build up, I just didn't realise the amount... Had I known, it would have got a serious blast to clear it all out..

Moved to a scorpion and haven't noticed as any build up, the solid silicon exhaust mounts haven't sagged and hesitation/flat spot that came intermittently hasn't returned. I put that down to pi55 poor flow due to the water/back pressure issues.

My mums 65 I think and hasnt complained about the exhaust since I fitted it to her Clio.. It's got a nice burble at idle but isn't offensive through the gears.. The clios are Rev happy so 70-80 will never be quiet on the motorway due to rubbish sound deadening.

Get some new exhaust rubbers, fill with black high temp silicon for some cheap solid mounts that won't sag or fall to bits..

If your tailpipes don't sit equal, one poke out more that the other, you may find your bumpers been pushed in.. There are brackets that bend so you can manipulate these to look perfect..

think that covers it.

Mine is a KTR/Janspeed cat-back system with unsilenced centre section. Pretty much perfect for me - not too boomy, but a million miles from the muted peashooters that come as standard. It's been on for another 80k as well without issue, so it's definitely a better item than OEM too.

My fiancee dropped me off at work this morning in the 182. I rarely get to hear what it sounds like from outside of the car. Sounded great to me and definitely not chavvy!

No worries - don't think of it as a mid-life crisis concern about the exhaust. I'm 41 and sold my Evo VI at 39. Now that was loud..... ;)

I sold my subaru sti ra when my eldest was born doing the responsible thing then regretted it and got a vxr !!! Didn't last long before the Mrs wanted a Picasso and said I was being selfish but had to get a toy again !!! Would love an Evo except it would be like running the space shuttle !!

Haha! Yep, they aren't the cheapest of cars to run, but not that crazy to be honest. Tyres and fuel were the biggest consumables - and driven sensibly, it could definitely be used as a daily. I managed to get it from Scotland down to the east side of Manchester on a full tank - and then some. Of course, using your right foot saw me go through 25 litres of super in under 90 miles.

Brilliant car though. Waaaay above my driving capabilities - especially when I took it on track at Anglesey. Just a shame that they rot like a b**ch - I decided to sell it when welding was required to get it through the MOT.

Ha ha I can imagine mate didn't realise they rotted like that !!! I know they are expensive to run but worth it for performance !! I imported my ra from Japan it was a version 5 and getting it sva'd was a mare spent a lot of money on that car should of gone Disney land really !!!!

As said above

They fill with water and no amount of thrashing the engine will clear it in my experience with both my misses old 182 and her Megane 225. Used to look like a steam train on boost even after driving for hours!

Wobble the exhaust and have a listen underneath, ours sounded like a bucket of water lol
