182 wheels

  FN2 Type R +MK6 Golf

People with 182 wheels will know as ive discovered they are not quite as easy to clean as the previous 172 mk2 ones i had

Ive got in as far as poss with a scouring sponge(safe side only)but appart from taking them off how do people clean them properly. Is there some magical tool i dont know of ,or am i destined to be removing them every few weeks to clean them properly

Regards,ian

ps to get inside them i use an adapted brush which cleans them fine with a bit of alloy wheel cleaner (i use cheapo wilkos stuff)

ps to remove baked on dust i use cillit bang and some car clay

I only picked my car up on Tuesday but have found a normal yellow type jumbo sponge cut in half works quite well and can be pushed between each spoke to do the inside. Polished and Sealed with Autoglym Resin and Gloss so hopefully that will keep the brake dust off.

Mine is a 172 but I use a Kent Alloy Wheel Brush from Homebase, works a treat at getting all the way in, only £2 too. :D

use a brush and climb under car to get behind spokes. Can be done. Tkes longer than cleaning rest of car though.

An old wash mitt is good for reaching round the back of the spokes, but doesnt really scrape off any baked on stuff.

Its a good idea to take the wheels off and clean them thoroughly and then use a long lasting wheel wax. It makes subsequent washes oh so easy. You dont have to do it more than a few times a year. Its great to do when the weather is so crap this time of year.

Its also good to make sure your wheel bolts arent too tight for the tiny wheel brace you find in the spare wheel. a few of my bolts were too tight and i had to buy a bigger wheel brace. Halfords do a great X shaped one for £6 that makes wheel removal a piece of cake. Double check the bolts after 50 miles though just incase you didnt tighten them properly.

Anotehr good tip is to always do the bolts up wih a torque wrench to avoid over tightening them.
