182 'Whining' Sound

  182
Hi all,

I've had a search & a look through the myriad of 'whine' based threads on the site but I'm still not 100% sure whether the whine I am hearing is of concern or not.

As stated, I have a 182 which had the Timing Belt, Aux Belt, Alternator & Power Steering Pump done/changed in January of this year.

The whine is present as soon as the car is started. I'm not sure whether it's still present at higher revs/speeds, I can't hear it in the car but I can't be sure whether that's because it stops or whether the cabin/road noise etc drowns it out.

Doesn't seem to go away, it always becomes audible as I slow down (approaching traffic lights, junctions etc) & remains present when idling & at low revs.

I'll post a couple of videos up & hopefully someone can allay my concerns, or point me in the direction of any suspected issues.

Many thanks

Hopefully I'm being paranoid as I haven't stuck my head under the bonnet of these whilst running before, in fact only once some time ago.

I've contacted the specialist who carried out the belt work in January & they have confirmed that neither the water pump nor dephaser were changed whilst the belts were done, which is both a shame & a concern....

I understand that the engines tend to run a little rough & are often considered to be 'characterful'. I'm just concerned that the dephaser is on it's way out, which will leave me with a delicious £600.00 bill to change the whole lot again....

They do make a bit of a whining sound. These engines are quite noisy as normal . Watching your video , there's no noise from your dephaser. You'll know when its on its way out as it's a very loud rattle .

Thank you! I wasn't sure about the dephaser, it's certainly not very diesel-esque, but I wasn't sure.

I guess I'll leave it be & accept that this is the character of this particular engine, thanks for easing my concerns.

yeah doesn't sound dephaser to me, just sounds like loaded alternator which you get after start as the battery recharges

does it ever go away however?

It doesn't seem to go away, but I can only hear it at lower speed/revs. I don't know whether that is because it stops once I hit/exceed certain speeds/revs or whether the general noise of the tyres/roads etc drown out the noise at higher speeds/revs.

It starts as soon as I start the car, regardless of how long I drive it, & the type of drive (back roads, motorway, town etc) if I'm driving at lower speed/revs, the noise is still present (or it returns).

Hopefully that makes some sense!
