Well done about 3800 miles so far in the 197.

Drove back to kent on saturday and was in a bit of rush as i was late. managed 27 mpg on the way back. driving quite quickly, with the occasional blast.

On the way home drove at 70mph didn't go above 80mph at anypoint. the 197 managed 33.5mpg. I was flipping amazed! Didn't expect it at all.

I actually found the 70mph drive so much more relaxing as everything else was overtaking me and i just enjoyed my cd's etc.

Getting old? I reckon so, driving economically and i bought a 197! ;)

Maybe i should just buy that Fiat panda diesel and be done with it! :D

yeah i could get a lot more mpg in a 182 at 70mph, but thats the nautre of the beast really.

Also found it to be quite a bit more comfortable at 70mph in the 1897 than the normal thrashing of it. very quiet at that speed for me :)

can't recall of the top of my head... it is about 3.4rpm i think... i may well be wrong.

the box ain't really a six speed box, it is very much like a 5 speed with 6 cogs spread between those 5 ratios.

Yeah whatever, that made a whole lot of sense.

You mean its a close ratio 6 speed.

Eh. How does that work then?

1st, into 2nd, into 3a, into 3b, in to 4th and then 5th?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

sounds gd, i know what you mean that its much more relaxing cruising along at 70 on the m/way then racing along at high speeds having to keep really focused.

I thought the 197 was a bit higher up the rev range in top gear @ 70mph, compared with 182. Not very good for motorway cruising and the MPG really sucks for a 2 ltr (medium sized) car. Why did they have to make it so big and heavy??

The MPG will probably get better with the more miles I expect.

It would be good to know what sort of MPG you get with 20,000 on the clock.

The thing thats Megane 225 fuel comsumption.

As I do quite a few miles now, so I do think about fuel comsumption when looking at a new car

The 172 is great I had 44mpg after a 220mile round trip on the weekend and that was driving around 80mph.

But I am starting to like the 197 more and more now though.

yes i beleive it is 98 only^^

i am happy enough with it's consumption considering it is a more powerful engine than the 182 and is heavier car. it would never be more economical really. But i am happy enough knowing i can get decent mpg out of it. My 182 normally used to get 30 mpg with the same style of driving so i am only 3 mpg down really. never cruised in the 182 as it wasn't that type of car to me! just used to thrash it lol like is should be :)

bloody hell! 44mpg! the best i had out of my 182 was 39mpg on a 60mph granny stlye cruise to work!

A 60mpg granny cruise will get me 45+mpg easy. That 182 manifold must be a thirsty thing. :clown:

33.5mpg isn't bad out of a 197 considering it's so heavy and the engine is in a higher state of tune than the 172/182. Plus the gearing is awful for the motorway, the 197's 6th gear is closer to the 4th than my 5th in mine. Insane.

Should get better with milage.

lol thrashing means 'spirited' to me. these cars are designed to be driven, doesn't mean i don't look after them all! my 182 was a stunner! :)

I normally average around 38mpg to work and back, thats including queuing in traffic for about a mile or two then motorway for 15miles at 80mph+ then a B-road blast.

I expect yours will get better with more miles.

my 182 will comfortably return 37mpg when on A roads for 4 - 4.5 hours averaging between 65 and 70mph.

Yes averaging i.e illegal speeds on the straights slowing down to still illegal speeds in most bends

Ha 'spirited', I like. You are right, they are good for 'spirited' driving but at least you can get sensible numbers from the car (182) too. (44+mpg). Not so much with the 197, which might put people off.

It's funny how listening to my 'bat out of hell' CD increases my fuel efficiency but as my Enya CD knocks out a good 40+ MPG!

I saw a 197 driving dowm my road yesterday and it looked stunning.
My cup still gets 38.9 mpg on the 50 mile a day run i do. I dont hang about either.
That is the main reason i havent sold the cup tho

The MPG computers may all be reading slightly differently.

I prefer calculating it via filling-up to the brim.

I managed 360.5 miles to a tank (I'd ran out of fuel by then), and the average computer reading was 35.6 MPG (I reset it for each tank).

When I filled up, the car took on 48 litres to the brim (how I always fill it up).

Thus it actually calculates to be 34.14 MPG in reality. If you want to be pedantic, the car's odometer slightly over reads, therefore the real-life MPG is even lower than that.

I'm very skeptical of 40+ MPG readings TBH....

Did you reset the mpg computer on the way back?

It's just if you didn't it's giving an mpg over the whole journey and as you had 27 on the way there, I'd have thought you would get about 40ish coming back at that speed.

I did a 600 mile round trip last weekend and averaged 43.6 in my 172.

Never went over 80 but generally sat at 70mph on cruise control.

I enjoy doing 70 as there's far less accelerating past people, getting stuck behind people, braking, manoeuvering etc. Just sit back and relax at 70 on cruise.
