197 rusting tailgate. Opinions?

Hi,

I've just dropped my 197 off at the local spray/bodywork centre to have some interior work done. I asked the guy there about a little bubble on the back of the tailgate, which he informs me is rust.

Anyone else experienced this? The car is only 3 and a half years old ( 08 ) and I'm in shock that a car that old can be rusting?!?!

I know Renault build quality is about as good as an STD, and their attention to finish and detail isn't that great either.. but I don't expect rusting at this age.

Could it have had a bump before?

seen a 05 focus with rusted thru sills and spare wheel hanger completely disintegrated. underside generally fuked.

the car lived beside the sea, so the salt air had helped the rust take over.

It may have had a bump as I sometimes have to click the front bumper in.

The previous owner lived in Stevenage, so it wouldn't be down to sea air or anything. Proper pissed me off this has though, yet more expense!! Grr!

Just hope it hasn't been painted before or they'll just tell you to leave the building mate.

They will just test the paint depth and if it hasn't been painted they will fix it.

It might be worth trying to get someone with a paint depth gauge to take a reading to see if it has been painted before, which would pretty much confirm it.
Don't the cars have a 6-year paint warranty?

I would imagine Renault UK would be helpful with this ? They seem to be pretty good with most issues...

There'd be at least a 10 or 12 year anti-corrosion warrenty, providing it's all original still (the tailgate I mean) surely ?

there is a few ppl who hav had this now, ive also got it on my tailgate in 2 small areas which is only visible when the bootlid is opened and mine is also an 08 plate. Mine has had no paintwork done or damage and the others ive read about also have no damage or paintwork, im afraid its just a drop in standards. renault should cover it

Renault Customer Services - 0800 072 3372They'll ask you to take the car to your nearest dealer for examination, and then Customer Services deal with the dealer direct. Be ready to chase they up regularly though!!

How long does it normally take? And do they do the work in house or refer you to a bodyshop?
