197 - Steering fault error - loss of power steering

I've had this a few times in my 197, seems to be fixed by turning the car off and starting again. You get a loud beep, error comes on the dash and then you lose the power sterring.

I also had a check ESP warning the other day which again was fixed by restarting.

Doesn't seem to be much information about this type of fault online.

Check your battery.

Could be related, car doesn’t get used much and it has got a smaller battery.

The guy in that link had the steering column replaced though

My ex had this problem on a standard mk3, turned out to be a slightly loose connection on the battery. I replaced it just to be sure and it never happened again.

In days gone by when you had a dodgy battery the first you knew about it was you tried to start it and it was dead or slow to start, these days its Electrical gremlins that usually put people down the rabbit hole of firing up the parts cannon

Seems crazy that in the event of a low battery, they thought it would be a good idea to switch off the power steering in the middle of driving. Why not something a bit less intrusive?

I had it go half way round donnington which was an interesting lap.
