197 steering knock when turned my diagnosis and cure

  Clio 172 and 197
Hi guys as above when I brought mine after a few days I noticed the steering seemed to be slightly knotchy and a knocking sound (which was getting louder everyday) when the wheel was turned which you could feel through the steering wheel itself. Being I mechanic I quickly went into diag mode and started to trace the fault, I found that where the top part of the column and the bottom part meet they are on a splined shaft that is above the pedal box inside the car. With my head under there and turning the steering wheel at the same time I noticed that the splined shaft moves in and out slightly but due to poor lubrication was sticking as thus causing the noise and knotcheyness, so a strip down and greased shaft later all was well, hope this helps it's really easy to see and diagnose :)
