Imo FSH is essential. It also needs belts done or price compensated accordingly.

Basically just pay £10, read the guide its perfect. I'll be printing it off and taking it with me when looking for 172s.

As stated above full service history is a must and make sure the cambelt was changed at either 72k or when the car was five years old. I've had two phase 1's which is the one you are looking at and i have found that at that age it is better to replace all the engine mounts as it makes a massive difference to the way they drive. Another thing to look for which is quite common is when you are flooring it in second and go for third there will be a slight grinding noise, some are worse than others and this is not just the older models. Any wallowing from the suspension probably means as damper is leaking these are cheap to replace even from renault. Check panel gaps and get a Hpi check done. Apart from that there is nothing major goes wrong with them.

its due its 2nd cambelt change next year so make sure its had its first at least!! they are every 5 years or 72k what ever comes first! many think its just 72k!

check exhaust for blowing joints or welds

rear damers leak and make the handling "interesting"

engine mounts wear and brake over time if driven hard so make sure their isnt too much movement in them

play in the steeringwheel can be track rod ends, inner track rods or suspension top mounts

damage to the steeringwheel is normal for that age car

service intervals are 12k or every year what ever comes first, make sure they have been done.

the rest is in the guide! ;)
