probably more because its a conversion and didnt roll out of dieppe (where they make them) like that but you never know unless ya ring insurance companies for quotes

If its more than a standard 172 then no way as that is £2000 in my mums name.Mayb i should get a 1.4 or 1.6 16v.

Being insured under your Mum's name is ilegal if you are the 'primary' user of the car.

Because insurance is offered depending on the level of risk. The level of risk is lower when the insurance is in your Dad's name, as the assumption by the insurance company is that he will do some (if not most) of the driving, therefore the premium is cheaper, as I'm sure you found out when looking for insurance.

Check this thread:

Basically, be very wary that if you have anaccident you COULD end up having your insurance declared void, and be faced with some very big bills, and possibly being charged with driving without insurance.

Other members with more specialist knowledge on insurance will be able to tell you more / cprrect any mistakes I have made.

the policy with just my dad was £113 a year as hes a proffesional Wagon driver so when i went onit it went up to £198 a year... and i was additional driver. duno about avoided cz its Fully comp but i aint allowed to drive other ppl's cars tho, which i dont minde.

before the clio i had a 306 TD same as iv done now with the insurance when the back window got smahed by some chavs i claimed off the insurance and payed the excess ov £75. now if you say dat any claim i make would have been voided why did the insurance pay for the back window then ?

not tryin to s**t things up but just tryin to clear summin up here :)

And just to put it into perspective, a reasonably minor bump can quite easily result in 20K worth of damage and personal injury claims, not to mention, if you are charged with anything, then it could go to court which means you will want a solicitor, maybe a barrister.

I know of someone who was involved in a claim that was running at 250K at one point, that if he hadn't have had the insruance all correct, then the insurance company would not be paying for, and these people will all want money from somewhere.

Read that post that I linked mate.

It's written by someone in the insurance business. In reality, £75 doesn't make a blind bit of difference, but if you rear end a Ferrari Enzo and cause 100K worth of damage, they will be looking for every way of getting out of paying for it.

ok, but say i just use the car sometimes to go to gym and have a smash then im ok with insurance as itll cover me, so put that perspective as when i go to work everyday and it does happen whats the difference? nuffin as i could say that im onlu using the car becouse i have no car to go there, my dads name ison the Logbook so should be fine.

Deeg is absolutely correct, it's illegal and you run the risk of getting f**ked if you have to make a claim. If the insurance company sees a claim from a young guy driving his "dad's car" automatically alarm bells will start to ring. Remember these companies don't make big profits by paying up when they don't have to, and don't make the assumption that they are stupid enough to not notice!

Like I said, the insurance company will do their best to get out of paying for a big claim, including watching how you use a courtesy vehicle, if you are the person using the courtesy vehicle all the time, they have reason to assume that you were the main driver fo the other car.

If you are insured as a named driver, they expect the main driver to do the lion share of the driving on the car. If the younger less experienced driver is doing and equal / greater / all share of teh driving, the insurance company would re-calculate the premium based on the increased risk.

It's up to you, but I wouldn't do it. I've got enough points as it is, without having the hassle of having to battle to get an insurance company to pay out when I need it most.

Lying about who the main driver is, is exactly the same as not declaring mods, saying you have 10 years NCB when you have none etc etc, just not worth the risk IMO.

k, i have just read the essay so really im gona leave it for a year then il have 1 NCB then transfer in my own name. as at the moment i cant iv payed the Full year upfront. cheers for clearing that up for me, il have to tell me mum aswell as shes under me dads name and doin the same as me :S.. hope i didnt cause any s**t lol ..

Think about it this way parent insured on car with young son as named driver. On a modified Clio. Son has an accident chances are there gonna investigate that claim if you have damaged others cars / property.

If they find an excuse to not pay out they will. And im sure a couple people on here were found out come claim time for doing similar things.
