2.6 litre clio

Ive been thinking about this whole engine transplant deal, and it sounds a bit expensive for an extra 200cc. Is there any way of getting an engine bigger than 2 litres in a Mk1 Clio? Either by modifying a 2.0 lump or sourcing a bigger motor? Ive decided to make a bit of a quest of having a reliable and usable 200bhp in my car, and I thought a good start would be to have at least 2.2 litres, more if possible. Any one seen anything or has any theories?

wow... a Clio Maxi Gordini!!!

I cant get no where about knowing if the 2lts Turbo engine from the Renault 21 would fit in a clio...
The R5 GT Turbo engine has been seen... but the 21 engine.. hum.....

That would be something...

Good luck

P.S.- if youre doing it... dont forget to post the snapshots.

Yes you can get a R21 Turbo conversion. Costs a good few grand but is probably better/safer than turboing ya standard lump.
What about a V6 conversion? Laguna lump, 6 speed box - renaultsport V6 beware! This must be possible - if its been done in a Nova it can be done in a Clio surely!!
or a 172 lump - would that fit?

3.0 V6 would be good (can you imagine the mid range pull?) but i reckon the clio has a much smaller engine bay than even a Nova, it might be worth a little more investigation though.

nah....renault 2lts are just fappin huge!
the F7R was originally gonna be used in the elise, but it was too heavy and expensive....oh well.

Steve, Im building a rear engined V6 Mk1 at the moment, and will build others to order if u r interested.

I like the idea so here are some questions: Which engine are you using? How much would it cost? Where would you get insurance for something like that? Im assuming it would end up as a rear drive two seater. Most importantly: where would the sub go?

Steve, the lump is from a Safrane, but thats academic, as the Capn tells me all the V6 gear is interchangeable.....
How much would it cost? Not much, let you know when mines done, depends on how mich you want me to do, which wheels/bodykit etc. Dont worry, there is still room for a F**K off sub box!!

Did someone say that the f7 engine was going to be used in the elise but was too expensive or something. Well that is a shame cause if you think how well the rover k series has done out of being used there and in catherhams etc. I mean you can get everything for a k-series and silly power from them, cause loads of people have done a pile of work with them, simply cause there are in all these enthusiast/semi track cars. If this had happened to f7 series of engines we would be spoilt for choice.

On your v6 conversion where are you putting the engine?

In the boot or will you have to lose the rear seats as well?

well... just came from the garage where I work my car.
Once again I have the man breading on my neck about working my engine. He just keeps on saying not to but instead change engine.

ok, my valver engine is out of question. big bucks needed to put it ok.

I need an easy engine (at least the idea) to swap with mine.
I saw pics from hill power (tx nick) of a clio with a megane 1.6lts multi-point energy engine.
I was thinking about it, but it will be worked before going into place. What kind of gains can we have working the head, light flywheel, 4-2-1 exhaust manifold... etc etc

I know the RT engine all done can go up to 120bhp.

also, what about the 1.7lts energy engine? is there a 1.9lts energy???

ya, no willy or valver engine, just because I cant afford them and fitting (which is pain in the ass.. electric stuff).

Thanks.

the megan 1.6 8v is an energy engine.
I am gona look into a bottom end swap for my 1400 if it works fingers crossed
Need to now the bore stroke and comp ratio though.

alot of these ideas are a bit pie in the sky arent they,

lets be realistic the time and money involved in putting a 3ltr V6 in the front of a clio would be a pointless exercise, it suffer from the most awfull understeer ever, the same power could be achieved from a F7R with some form of forced induction at a fraction of the cost, but the cost will still be £4-£5k when doing alot of it yourself,

im dont mean to be boring but lets be realistic,

MK1V6 - thats one hell of a conversion, good luck to you, transmission must be difficult/expensive or do you transverse mount the engine (back to front of what i would be in the front) and the basicaly mount everything back to front with the wheels driving in the opposite direction

other wise drive taken back up the the gearbox in the font and then back again to the rear wheels? or am i missing somthing obvious like using a clio V6 box?

changine the block, crank and associated ancilliaries to increase capacity to 1.6L, more power for little effort....i think hes usung his 1.4 head though....dunno about mounts and stuff though.

Alex, the F7p was gonn be used, and you aer so right in saying the clio would be come cult as there would be so much available for it!!!! shame....renault had to go and spoil it didnt they, i bet they just asked for too much!

something I would like to do... better since I can get the megane 1.6lts engine really cheap.. without gearbox... does mine fit? I guess so.
My problem is not mechanic... electric parts are a pain in the ass!!!

Hate myself for being so bad at auto-electric.

So have we got any serious options here?

Although I would like as big an engine as possible, it is a good point that if its too heavy it will make the car a pig round corners.

The Volvo 440 turbo engine only has 120bhp, so I dont think that is a very good plan, since the 16v engine has 137.

Does the 172 engine fit in the mk1? That engine would be quite good fun, but would probably be expensive. (am I right?)

Would an engine from another manufacturer be easy to fit? (probably not right?)

What is the cheapest and most user friendly route to 200bhp? 200cc doesnt seem to justify the thousands it costs for an engine transplant to the Williams/Megane 2.0. Especially since I would still have to spend a lot tuning that to 200bhp.

Can this basic engine block be bored/stroked to any larger than 2 litres?

So many questions....
