2 different tyres on the front!

Car  BMW 320 M Sport, 197
I'm considering a 197 Cup, but the one I've found has the Conti's on the rear, but a Dunlop on one front, and a cheap brand on another!

Whats the rules with regards to not having 2 different tyres on the same axle?

buy a nice set of 4 new tyres then keep the others as spares, that what i would do. I hate having tyres that dont match. its a relatively expensive car show it some respect :D

Cheap tyres = crap handling. A mate of mine brought remoulds for £20 a corner and was pleased until came over the railway bridge on wolverhampton road in stafford and ended up hitting parked cars as an unmarked cop car was coming the other way.

I think they probably just put any old 'cheap' tyre on it as they knew they were going to get rid of it. I'd want the same tyres on the same axles tbh.

I'd walk away and go look at another. Unless it's cheap and in mint condition.

Its an mot fail aswell having two different tyres on the front or back, plus makes the handling very twitchy, like said though, if somebody is doing the bare minimum to keep their car road worthy i.e 1 cheap tyre then Id avoid it

The car's quite cheap as I don't think the guy really knows much about the car, he didn't even know it had Cruise Control on the steering wheel as he's never used it! Its got full spec, in mint condition but yes as there's 3 different tyres on it think I can use that as a negotiating tool. :)
oh and the guys told me he's been made redundant which probably explains for the cheaper tyre

All i tell people when they talk about cheap tyres is, "they are the only parts on your car that our touching the road surface when your moving" so why on earth would people want to budget on this?

If you was to buy the car, i'd at least knock the guy down in price for what would be a set of 4 good tyres........

Ok i've just re-read your post, 197 cup!!! on those! hehe yeah i'd maybe walk away also........

Its an mot fail aswell having two different tyres on the front or back

Only mixing cross ply and radial tyres is an MOT fail. There was a thread recently on this.

I wouldn't worry about it myself if the rest of the car looks good. Buy a new tyre if it bothers you. Until recent times I've mixed tyre makes and used budgets without any problems. Now I have more cash I buy decent tyres and match them on the axle.

car drives fine, just the cheap tyre on the front and the fact the guy said he's out of work from redundancy seemed to be the only issue.

yeah its just mixing cross ply and radial that's an issue, you can have a different make on each corner if you like, as long as they're all the same construction type (ie radial) and above 1.6mm you'll be fine

 ahhhhhhhh! Just did a RAC Car Data Check and the mileage is out by 10k!!!!!!! Think this is a ringer!!!! :(

How can you check a cars day to day mileage :S

Also if the guy has a cheapo tyre on it...may mean he doesn't thrash the car round corners? Possibly a good sign?

Its registered from when the guy bought the car as having 13,800 miles on it, yet he has it advertised with 5500miles on the car, which I think I caught a glimpse off when I test drove it but can't remember for sure, but he did say the mileage was about 5500 and plus the fact he hasn't got back to me about the V5 details I asked for last night!

Theres other cars out there, walk away and buy one you're happy with, rather than one that will "make do"

I'm a pretty good testament to buying cars without giving much thought to costs :dapprove:

cheers Dave88, looks like thats the only option tbh. I wouldn't even mind say if the car actually had 15,500 miles on it and the guy had made a mistake on the advert but its not worth the risk. Although is it worth doing another check, say an HPI aswell as RAC Check to double check the details?

It sounds a bit odd to me, has the seller got bills with the mileage on aswell the service book etc ?

From what i've read i'd be wary tbh.
