200 Bhp ???

true.....you can do all that, but it doesnt make it a good engine. Turbos are very easy to make power on. Hondas old B series are pumping out 1000bhp in 1.8 trim.

The vag has an apalling head, crap chamber etc etc. The block is strong, but geometry isnt great either.

I just dont find the vag engine anything special and its nothing that any other 2ltr 4 pot cant do.

What would be the best engine to use for a reliable cheapish 300bhp with a 6 speed box?

It might just be me but I like to tune a car using it in essence its original components/design characteristics To me thats the challenge, engine transplants from other marques generally require fabrication work rather than engineering work . So I have a 172 with the F4R and JC5 amd I want to get it to 200 bhp thats the challenge I have set myself. If I wanted to tune a VW lump I would have bought a VW car.

Cheapest 4pt for 200-300hp is the Vauhaull unit - Years of development and very reliable.

Best 4pt for 200 - 350 is Honda K20A - loads of developemnt and supercharger option cheap and proven. A Atom for example.

Yeh i agree with that. Gas flow is improved though once the head has been ported and relieved - its made a difference on my lump

even then, its apalling.

I specialise in flow development and i liken the vag head to reproduction toilet bowls. It takes serious money to get that thing to do anything decent.
