200 Steering Wheel

Seems the big thing at the moment this!

Picked up a 200 wheel and just had a go at fitting it but have experienced the same problem as Jamie did. There is something more than just the plastics making the wheel stick in one position.

JMS have said they haven't modified their 197 wheel but they are the same fitment which i just dont understand.

I have been checking part numbers and the 197 and 200 wheels with cruise have different part numbers (presumably down to the colour of the stitching) but if you opt for a 197 or 200 wheel without cruise the part numbers are the same, so fitting must be identical.

While it was on it was excellent to hold, never got around to trying out the cruise as it was not nice to drive as it was but it should work with my little mod.

Got a pic of it fitted, airbag light went out but doesn't guarantee it works!

Will get another pic showing the rear of the wheel next to a 1*2 wheel. Like Jamie said it might need some cutting to fit!

So what jenic short for?

Nice wheel.
It my surname lol, there are only about 8 of us in the country. It used to be cool having a foreign surname until all the polish started moving over but thats for another thread ;)

Its odd that the 200 wheel doesn't auto return, but the 197 wheel does. They may look the same, but the results suggest they're not.

I'll be getting a 197 wheel as it's been proven to work, and I prefer the red stiching.

But the part numbers are the same!!!

That doesn't mean they didn't change them slightly during later manufacturing processes. Clearly something's different because yours and Jamie's don't work.

But if you go in and buy a brand new wheel to replace yours then it will surely be this style, so it wouldn't fit either?

So is the answer to get an early 197 wheel, doubtful tbh

Going to have a go at cutting it at the weekend i think, to make it fit.

Only problem is i cant get the f**king thing off now. The airbag is fully unclipped at the bottom but wont pull out. Really pissed off.

Matey, I think your missing what is in plain sight. As per other thread its not a matter of doubting something etc, the 197 is a different fitment to the 200 with CC otherwise they would suffer from the same issue. end.

There are so many factors that can influence the spacing of the wheel/length of threads etc unless you have h'actually measured the two with a set of calipers there is no way of knowing :)

Seems strange though, how non cc wheels are identical.

Well i've just been out in it and the cruise works with the new wheel now, so all thats left is this return issue.

Its constantly rubbing on something but not sure what (have an idea though). Just leaving it 30 mins before i remove the new wheel and get some decent pictures of the back of the wheels.

At the weekend I'm going to go up to my uncles garage where we'll put the 200 and 182 wheels side by side and see if we can alter the 200 wheel to fit.

Edit: Oh, and you weren't lying, it is infinitely nicer to drive with than the 182 wheel, feels much nicer.

The reason it wont fit is what Jamie was getting at I think.

Both wheels can be seen below:

As you can see, where the 200 wheel attaches to the steering column it is significantly longer than the old wheel. This is what is catching on the inside of the column (I can see marks where it has worn into it). This excess serves no purpose on my car as there are no splines in the last half inch or so and I presume is used purely to locate it onto a 200. The best thing seems to be to cut this down bit by bit until it stops catching and take it from there.

Aye, get the hacksaw out.
Its a bit thick for that lol, uncles got proper metal working tools so he'll get it cut down for me.

No rush for it now though, just glad all the electrics appear to be working and that i know what the problem is.

When it is fitted and working correctly i'll get a little guide up showing what you have to cut/how the cruise wires work etc.

Can you stage a crash too, so that we can be sure the airbag works? Thanks.

Please don't hurt yourself in the process.

I'd love a 197/200 wheel in mine, how much do they tend to go for?

Lol, i'm going to let JMS go ahead and do that testing :rasp:

Second hand, well who knows? I got this fairly cheap but they rarely come up so hard to price. Presume the 197 will sell for slightley more as it doesn't seem to need modifying to fit. Maybe expect to pay around £200 for wheel and airbag used?
