2000 CLIO 1.6 STOP LIGHT and HANDBRAKE LIGHT on ONLY WHEN HANDBRAKE APPLIED

Hi All am new here and am after some HELP. I have a 2000 plate Clio 1.6 RSI and the STOP light comes on with the Handbrake light when the handbrake is applied and does not come on at any other times. Does anyone have experience of this or can offer some pointers. Don't think its the brake fluid as the handbrake is cable operated and not hydraulic but have not checked this yet. Any COMMENTS greatly appreciated.:S

Thanks for that mate. Only just purchased the car and was reading the manual which does not state this merely that the STOP light is a warning that something is up. Thanks again
