205/195?????

  clio 172 cup
dont know if this is in the right section?

i need four new tyres on my cup, will fitting the 205 wide 182 tyres be worth the extra cash over the standard size gsd3s ive got on now?

i can get four gsd3 for 260 fitted and im looking at 320 for the michelins

what about going back to the original continentals?
or any other suggestions??

hi there. on a 7" rim a 195 will be almost the perfect width, you can get away with a 205 perfectly well but the 195 will have slightly sharper handling. think that if the rim stays the same width and you keep on widening the tyre you will eventually have an overhang of tyre.
saying that though the difference is pretty negligble with such a small change, and the profile is more important. i was running 215 40's on standard rims and it was still like a go-cart.

cheers, doug.

ps. have you tried toyos?

are you saying you can fit 195's and 205's to the same alloys?

yes you can. i dont know exactly the limits, but you can fit slightly wider or narrower tyres on to the same rim, too much either way and you will start to have problems though.

Hear'say ;)

Standard rim will fit 215's but they will scrub on lock, basically to wide for a 7" rim. 205's are perfect on the OE 7" wheel, no problems what so ever, and certainly no difference in handling ability, certainly nothing i've noticed from my time on PE2's.

Also I have GSD3's on my front now, was £70 a corner, or £110 if i wanted PE2's. Given the relative performance of both tyres, from various media reviews I took the smart choice and went for GSD3's - this was especially influenced by the wet performance of the GSD3 compared to the PE2, the Eagle is a much more capable tyre in wet conditions and dealing with standing water - no aquaplaning anymore, which I found the PE2's very prone to.

The only issue with GSD3's is that milage wise you won't get as many out of them as the PE2's because the compound is softer, and indeed because of the softer rubber, they aren't as capable on track during hot conditions, some users complained of the tyre melting under stress.

Personally though, i'd go for 205/45/16 Eagle F1 GSD3's (also W rated compared to PE2 on V (W cost further more))and pocket the change.

i went from 195's to 205! Certainly beta in the dry...but terrible in the wet.

Ive been thinking about this alot. With my old 1.2 i had 205 tyres and flying round corners was really comfortable as the car seem to glide around roundabouts where now with my 172 ive got 195,s and it doesnt feel as realiable as before and instead of thinking the cars going to glide im worrying it,ll tip. lol
Make sound stupid but do you get what im trying to say?

moved up to 205's in my cup... haven't went back since. I like the look of a fatter tyre aswell. And no difference in handling tbh

why worse in the wet??

more rubber in contact with the road that can lead to aquaplaining (sp)

I'd stick with 195's tbh, especaially if lowered, as they will catch/rub. 182's have the different offset to compensate this

i bought some trophy turinis, and am gonna fit 195/45 eagle f1's, getting rid of the cheapy 205/45's which are on them at the moment.

I've just gone from 195 45 16 to 205 45 16 Paradas on my 172 cup, slightly comfier ride, more grip, look better too - the arches are not so gappy either!

205s are only ok if you fiddly with the geo (how does the 182 compare?), otherwise you just get blunt turn-in.

195s are also a lot cheaper!

as gaz said, stick with 195's on a 172 cup especially if lowered because of the offset you'll be rubbing. but if you're still running the 4x4 renault setup then you'l be fine, should be stiffer sidewalls depending on the rubber too.

i tried 205's once and nearly ripped the front arch off!

What about fitting the 182 cup alloy wheel with a 195/45 tyre?
Is a 195 too narrow for the wheel?

I have a 172 and it is lowered 40mm on Apex and am thinking about getting a set of 182 wheels for it and fitting the 195 tyres I have to the 182 wheels.
