I just use one bucket, If the mitt gets dirty I blast it with the pressure washer.

Cant be arsed with 2 buckets. The car is machine polished once a year and its an easy job as the swirls are very minor when it comes to it.

Why the hell people spend this much money on stuff like this I have no idea.

I wish I could find you the picture of the 2bm. One was black and one was clear and that was after a power wash and a snow foam.

Using 1 bucket isn't the right way to go about it. Nor is machine polishing your car once a year? What are you going do do when the paint levels go down? The level of paint will also be affacted by uv, the basecoat will then start to fade under the lacquer as there is not enough protection from the lacquer.

It depends how dirty said car is..if its protected well and not filthy I only use 1 bucket...if its filthy like this time of year I use 1 guy 2 buckets.

Been detailing for about 5 years mate (big wow), Im well aware of what the bucket looks like when im nearly done, and what clear water 2nd buckets look like. Just cant be fucked these days, i know I should. Paint levels go down? I dont understand what your trying to say. My car remains protected always, waxed regularly in summer and a good stong sealant in winter. s**t I only use snowfoam in winter unless it gets bad in summer. Perhaps 2 seperate applications if required in winter. The level of swirls on the car are minimal when it comes to it, im expecting final finish will do the job with a light cutting pad. While I like detailing, it is a car at the end of the day. I feel a single machine polish in March is necessary, leaving the car with decent paintwork for summer. Come October it gets a good clay and then protected with Zaino Z5/zfx all the way through march again.

My old car got left for about a year and that was black. I was using old towels which marred my paintwork, but still using a washmitt, 1 bucket and decent shampoo. Lost interest in detailing as I got so ANAL about swirls and marring. Anyway I got kickstarted back into it by a mate and when I looked at the paint under a lamp it was pretty s**t to say the leist. But the swirls werent deep and machine polishing was a piece of piss. I decided Id stop spening so much time and money on detailing and I dont anymore.

<3 btw this isnt me getting on a high horse.

2 Buckets?

Detailing?

£2 pressure wash at the local garage is enough for me atm!

If youve been detailing for 5 years then you should know that polishing requires cutting of the laquer/paint, resulting in less every time you polish it. I think what Gally is trying to say is that if your car is left untreated properly (machine polishing) The current paintwork state will keep deteriorating under weather and fade due to servere UV rays. Now this may not be the case for some people as they might have made a very good choice in products, using a good UV repellant that wont see your car fade as quick as others. Machine polishing is as neccessary as you want it to be. I only machine mine once a yr yet clay it every 3 months. Reasons behind this is:

a) I want to own the car till i run it into the ground so good healthy paint readings are a big factor for me.
b) I maintain my car very well without the need to polish as regular as others like/need to, so im not only saving paint but also saving a lot of money on polish/pads etc.
c) If i was planning to get rid of the car or know i wouldnt be keeping it long term, polishing the car constantly throughout you ownership would only leave the next sorry person with thin paint readings. Something ive always considered as it is such a passion to me, aswell dealing with many!!!
d) Last but not least, you only get one factory clearcoat or certain level of paint to work with during its lifetime so use it wisely. Many people/detailers would agree with me that a resprayed car is never the same.

This!

But I got a black bucket from somewhere aswell. So have black one for soap, clean orange one for water. Then my wheel bucket has gone dirty as greasey as, from megs endurance tire gel style stuff I reckon.

Not forgetting 2 grit guards, otherwise the point of using 2 buckets would be pretty useless. On that note, i dont think they fit in b&q buckets.......

Yeah I agree, I wont be keeping the car more than 3-4 years hopefully (Want a new FRS end of next year) so ive got paint to play with. Ive owned it since new and its been polished once (59 plate), its getting done next month I think. Yet at the same time it gets stripped down on a fairly regular basis, pre cleaner and then wax every month or so during the summer. In winter it gets sealed up and left to defend for itsel lol. But the sealant lasts and come this time of year after the s**t weather, still sheets like fun. The reasons youve pointed out are the reasons I do the same, and the fact I dont really enjoy machine polishing a car that much. I also realy cant tell the difference between when I first owned the car (and my previous cars) and see any difference in paintwork quality or colour at the point where I sold it.

Also, half the reason I lost interest in detailing and my old car was because It was black, and no matter how hard I tried couldnt defeat the swirls after a few weeks and was forever polishing it and spending money like water.

I stopped reading there (not really) but why even come in here and post that, what you were practically saying is it's okay to use 1 bucket because I know it's marring the paint but I don't care, ill correct it anyway. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I don't care that you're not as into detailing as you used to be but there are a lot of newbies come into this section and posting things like that isn't helping anyone imo.

For your info you've been detailing longer than me but that goes for nothing at the end of the day.

@Lew, you should post more dude, are you busy during the week?

At the moment mate yeah, ive started having a weekend on and off recently due to over using my rotary i think. I managed to get whats called a ganglian on my wrist joint and had to have it drained so my wrist has been a bit off. I dont do it full time at the moment due to the current climate that we have been getting out of.
