2nd car & insurance

  Mrs' valver! &myV6 veccy

Heres the deal folks:-

Thinking of getting a cheap(ish) 2nd car for everyday use, as my clio is gonna be garaged quite alot when finished. Needs to be quite quick & if poss. turbod.

Im thinking of either a Mk 2 scort RS tubs, or (if i can find one) a Rover 220 GTi/GSi turbo.

How could i get an insurance policy to cover both cars? Id be about 21 1/2 by the time i had the money to get the other car mind.

Paying enough on the 16v at the moment. Wouldnt wanna have to get a completely seperate policy for the other car, couldnt afford it!

Cheers folks,

Al

you can get 3rd party fire and theft using your existing cover (check your cover note - request it if its not there) if you put your second car in someone elses name, like your mum or dad or partner

i think you might find that the second car has to be insured for a fully comp driver to be insured third party on it. Not sure of your age or who your with but i know that tesco does not let anyone under 22 (i think this age) with fully comp insurance drive another car third party. Ive recently got a second car and have had to take out an entirely different policy.

I found out (after taking out 2 separate ones) either Roadsure or Liverpool Victoria (one of these) will put both cars on the same policy, but one of them has a mileage limited to approx 3000 from what i remember.

did u mean a S2 RST mate? if so id think again. If your looking for reliability then a MK4 escort is not the way to go. Better off getting alittle run about like alittle saxo/pug rallye 1.3

I recently bought a second car just to get me to work and back they gave me 50%ncb when i phoned my then current insurer mind you im an old git

Will be 21 in march. Might have to give it a miss :-(

Ill have a phone around when i get my car back on the road & have to insure it again. Hopefully someone can sort me out for the 2 cars on the 1 policy i.e. what Bibbla mentioned about limited mileage.

The clio would be the weekend car if so. Garaged most prob. over the week.

Yeah I meant a series 2. If i can find one thats been well looked after and is standardish then i wouldnt mind paying up to about 2k for one.

Would much rather find a rover 220 GTi/GSi turbo though. Have a feeling id have to get a second policy in my dads name though! Stupidly powerful things for FWD. Would look quite nice in black with big rims, respray & lowered too!

Havent read all whats been said so i may be repeating stuff...

NCB only works on one car at a time, but i found that the insurance company were happy to accept that I have NCB and that it was tied up with another car - so while you may not get a full discount they will take it in to consideration.

also the basic principal that if your driving one car you cant crash the other, so limit both milages to a sensible level. My valvers unlimeted milage I think, but the 7 is on a 1500mile policy, they did check what milage its on, but its easy to miss read the meter and give yourself a little lee way - just dont go overboard cos they could void your policy if you do smash.

ive just bought a winter car so my clio is off the road for winter but i had to get my mum to insure the car under her name and put me under as a second driver as i cant be a main driver on 2 cars at the same time..

hope that helps

Alex i thought you COULD be the main driver on 2 cars at the same time, only that you would have to split your no-claims between the 2 cars, or put all your no-claims on 1 car with none on the other. Thats what i thought anyway?

Alex why didnt you just swap your insurance over to the other car? If your clio is locked away safely, whats the point in having insurance on your clio when its gonna be off the road? Just a thought.....

Wes you have a 172, so i imagine you have a few years no-claims behind you at least? Im only 20 and will have my first year soon!

Im tempted to buy another valver and drop a 5 GTT in it!

Have you looked at classic insurance policies? (not sure, but you may struggle to get cover under 25), i have always had my second cars on a classic policy, limited miles, usually max 5,000 PA, NCB is applicable, TPFF cover. Most of the companies offering these policies cover cars over 10 years old which are considered as classics or future classics, some more flexible than others on what constitutes a classis. Look in the back of a copy of any of the classis car mags to find companies offering. I have had cover on various cars costing between £96 - £350 PA, worth a try.
