2nd cars

This may apply to those of you who run V6's and 197's.

I was wondering who had 2nd cars and used their Clio or A car on the weekend only.

This applies to me as I am thinking of getting something really thirsty. Therefore I was going to get a car to do my work run which is 32 miles a day and a weekend/Friday motor.

The mpg, running costs and insurance I would save would be fairly substantial but against that I have two RFL, mot's to fund. Although on the 2nd car I wouldn't be doing much servicing!

Who has done this route and does it work for them?

(Ps, not really sure what section to post this is in).

I have a crappy old combo van for day to day which is free other than fuel/insurance for me.

Works for me as my DC2 stays mint, and I dont worry about parking anywhere etc.
If you're considering it think of an old van, seriously. Run forever, cheap to buy, practical and decent on fuel.

I worked out pro's and con's of this.

Buy the time id bought the second car, insured it, mot for both, petrol for both, general running costs etc etc it worked out i would be saving a huge amount over just running the clio with ITB's

I crunched some numbers and it is not viable tbh, maybe I should have done this before posting.

Year 1 is obviously negative cash flow due to new purchase. Thereafter I save on fuel but incur alot of expense on insurance (another £500) and RFL, MOT etc, therefore still negative.

The extra fuel is about £500 pr yr so not that bad but it is a 50% increase in my fuel bill per week (currently £20 will go to £30 ish) but overall this is much cheaper.

The only way it was going to work for me was to SORN the clio for 6months, saving about £750 from insurance, tax and fuel costs. But i didnt want it just sat there after having the work done, thats what made my mind up :)

I used to run the cup alongside another car! Sold everything and heading for the 200 on its own!
